Fast System feels like Chuwing Gum

  • Quote

Post by sydney » Fri Sep 15, 2006 6:31 pm

My AMD X2 3800, Asus A8N-SLI (nforce4), 1,5 GB RAM feels like a Chewing Gum if i Copy any data from DVD, SMB, Vmware, Disk to Disk.

Its a SATA Harddrive well then is DMA default on.
Filesystem is reiserfs 3.6

If i Copy anything the System is going slow like a hell, i am switching betwen the Firefox windos that takes a long time 5 -10 seconds.

Is quite out of the question to start any new program (firefox, krusader, opera, mplayer etc,) it take more then a minute.

The Mashine isent a gentoo PC ( its archlinux). In gentoo forum is the response much better.
Thank you for understanding and help

Here now my dmesg.

You have many things in your kernel enabled, which are not nessecary.
E.g.: all I/O schedulers.
Kernel preemption is not nessecary.
plug and play.

You also have a problem with the SIL SATA controller: SATA link down.
Vesafb: also not nessecary.

By the way: how big is your kernel?

Is this a Big problem, i have enough Ram in my System, i dont care about few MB larger Kernel.
Do you thing the IO schedular is the Problem?

The size of the kernel should not exceed 2MB.

My (monotlithic) kernel has a size of 1.6MB.

Just configure the kernel manually.

Switch to root on console:

Code: Select all

lspci -v

Code: Select all

cat /proc/cpuinfo
Understand the output of these commands, configure the kernel and compile the kernel.

As I understand it, kernel size shouldn't harm performance that drastically, and although this is generally a good thing, configuring/compiling the kernel manually probably won't magically solve your problem.
Your problem sounds a bit like mine, though. I have very slow I/O performance on a 600 MHz Via machine. While that doesn't quite compare to your rig, there are some similarities: My machine also shows good performance when doing a hdparm -tT (dd reads raw data, doesn't it? So that should be comparable), and I also use reiserfs (I believe it's 3.6). And of course I have this abnormally high I/O wait percentage.
The next thing I wanted to try is a different filesystem, but I don't have access to that machine until next week. I just thought that this might be something worth trying for you, too.

I use reiserfs 3.6 too and have no problems, no iowait.
But when I work with my external usb hard disk, the same disk operations are more than twice faster although the hdparm show me that it is only 150% faster than the internal disk. So there should be another parameter that is the bus driver or something like this.

My brother had some slowness with reiserfs and switched to etx3 and he is happy with it now, but he never found why reiserfs was so slow on his computer.

Usually reiserfs(3) became slow when fragmentation is high.
That happens either when a lot i/o happened on a partition, usually with normal use and time passing over the system, or when free space turns short.

I recompiled my kernel and I reduced it to 2.3mb, I use reiserfs too so I'll try ext3 when I find a way to backup my partitions :?

usually a plain cp -a and some free space is all you need ;)

btw, a kernel of 2.3M is still a huge one. Not that this is important but, are you sure that you need all you compiled in? Mine with all need modules (except nvidia, of course) is only 1.7M.

here are some good tips for ext3.

I think I compiled only necessary things, I'll configure kernel again to try to reduce kernel's size.

Thank you for the link but my problem is free space

Sorry for my bad english

got /usr/src/linux
make menuconfig

and read the help text for the entries in the config.

If something is unclear, just ask.

I recompiled but I haven't changed a lot of options, I think I need all I marked. If someone could take a look to my .config file I attach it, if not, don't mind. Thanks.

You both need to read the thread titled "TIP Strip comments when posting config files"

The below command will print your kernel config without the comments. It keep people from cramping their index finger from all of the scrolling.
perl -pne 's/^\s*([#;].*|\s*)\n$//' /usr/src/linux/.config

Can you print the output of lspci?

hi, don't look at the question of kernel size with much care. It's not that important!

Slow down is most probably due to fragmentation of reiser filesystem, specially if you are short in space.

I don't think wise not compile several filesystem and only choose one as someone suggested. Thats a little radical and you may find yourself unable of access some of your partitions.
If you are really concerned with kernel size, build ext3 inside kernel (=y) and some others, namely reiserFS, as modules (=m). Then they will only be loaded if you needed or if you choose to load them.
ESTRAGON: We've lost our rights?
VLADIMIR: (distinctly) We got rid of them.

Yes, I have 93% and 85% disk used in reiserfs partitions so I'll try ext3.

Thanks to everybody helped me!

I think it's a SATA issue.

We're a little group who have the same problem; http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-48 ... rt-25.html
Computer games don't affect kids, I mean, if pacman affected us as kids we'd all run around in a darkened room munching pills and listening to repetitive music.

It seems that disabling preemption solves the problem, I'll try :)

EDIT: Many thanks to Keruskerfuerst. I just see your post correcting my .config

EDIT2: I disabled preemption and my pc works much faster with I/O charge :D

EDIT3: However, there's still some lag
