Well, I unmasked the masked packages, cuz I'm a daredevil. 70 packages need to be built:

Interestingly, I don't see mono in there, but I guess it's not a required dependency. Thought it was needed for Tomboy. Also had to unmerge dev-python/pygtk as it was blocking dev-python/pygobject.

I'll let y'all know about any problems...

It all compiled fine. No errors.

Everything SEEMS to be working.. And feels speedier. Except for some reason my DVD doesn't show up when I pop it in.. I'll have to investigate that.

New icons are much better looking.

New power manager showed up in the notification area... rhythmbox got an error whenloading shared library libnautilus-burn.so.3 so maybe I need to do a revdep-rebuild...

Doesn't seem to be any amd64-specific related issues.

How did you manage to unmask them? I've tried adding just gnome-terminal to /etc/portage/package.keywords with:
x11-misc/gnome-terminal

and I tried:
x11-misc/gnome-terminal ~amd64

neither seemed to want to emerge it with: emerge -pv gnome-terminal (when I see that it's going to emerge the right version for that, I'll unmask the rest :))

Thanks!

3. $ emerge world -uDpv (This will show everything to be emerged, depending on your setup you might have to add additional packages to /etc/portage/package.keywords)

4. Next, do $emerge world -uD

5. Finally, just to be safe do $ revdep-rebuild to make sure everything links to the new libraries properly.

Your mileage might vary, be careful with unmasked packages:)

You might want to then emerge some of the new stuff like this:

emerge tomboy

:) If you get anything blocking anything else, just unemerge the thing that's blocking the new thing..

haha. I was getting so bored with my ARCH amd64 system :)

I have a complete and working package.keywords file listing for gnome 2.16 (includes tomboy and everything else) in the Gnome 2.16 thread in the Desktop forum section. use this URL http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-35 ... ml#3572900

I had to emerge 99 packages from an up-to-date ARCH. I had no issues besides cairo needing the 'pdf' USE flag so that gtk+ wouldn't fail.

if you take my list, put in into package.keywords and also into package.unmask so that you don't need to keep commenting out the hardmask every sync.

uhm. oh yeah the ~amd64 part is unnecessary in package.keywords. If the package is listed there it is assumed to mean you want the ~ARCH for your system. Specifing it is alright but not needed. It is the same thing for package.unmask, you can just list the package name. no '>=' or versioning needed.

have you checked the sticky gnome 2.16 thread in the Desktop section? Zenity having issues seems to be common.

I unmasked the whole gnome 2.16 tree (mono deps included) and gave it the ol' emerge...

Only issue I had was with evolution-sharp, and there's a bug reported with an updated ebuild fix for that...

Spent longer trying to get things looking back to "normal" (I'm not a big fan of the new theme) than it did solving issues.

I also upgraded glibc and gcc in the process. Worked quite well, as posted in the Gnome 2.16 thread - smoothest upgrade to date...

I agree about the new icon theme and about it being a very smooth upgrade!

so if you upgrade to gnome 2.16 and update gtk+ during the procedure, what happens with 32bit apps and the x86-emul gtklibs stuff which has yet to be updated?

Not running any 32 bit programs aside from mplayer-bin I don't know what you mean by that, iamarug...

Think about it, your not using gnome 2.16 32bit libs, your using gnome 2.14, what the -bin packages you have were compiled against. So you have nothing to worry about ;)

Hmm. yes indeed. But I wont be having problems with applications compiled against previous libraries will I?

If not, I think I may give it a try to compile 2.16 later tonight. Going to read up first to see if I need to do anything special to prepare such as deleting user settings and so on.

Thanks for the tip

you'll have exactly the same 32bit libs before and after the install :)

BAAAH

Its taking all my will power but I think I will wait till everything is in ~amd64 before merging it all.

I just got everything working the way I liked too (well except for i havent yet been able to get nautilus to use mplayer to make thumbnails instead of totem), but pretty much my system is perfect!

ok, I lied, I have no self control. Installing as we speak, most of the larger compiles are already done, some smaller ones remaining.

Anybody else in here having issues with dbus sessions? I've been reading the gdm bug and keeping my eye on the Gnome 2.16 sticky in the Desktop forum, but none of them have said much of anything about a resolution. I'm having a helluva time with getting dbus sessions to start, even though I use gdm.

I haven't had any dbus issues since i've gone to 2.16. I did see posts about it but haven't experienced it myself:

Code: Select all

user hostname ~ $ ps -fA |grep -i dbus
101 5320 1 0 Sep12 ? 00:00:06 /usr/bin/dbus-daemon --system
user 6449 1 0 Sep12 ? 00:00:00 /usr/bin/dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session
user 6450 1 0 Sep12 ? 00:00:00 dbus-daemon --fork --print-pid 8 --print-address 6 --session

It's weird, THIS little official guide, users of GDM shouldn't have any problem..

Have you tryed to emerge dbus again?

I always love installing the new release of gnome, so exciting : ). I did a backup before i started upgrading. I always hate screwing up my system from a major update like this.. 6 of 59.. I'm hoping it will turn out alright.

Edit: Worked out pretty good for me.

Went back to 2.14. No matter what I did, something was always trying to emerge a 2.14 version. The mixtures was hell on my system.

that's what emerge --tree is for.
