I upgraded to 2.16 succesfully, only two problems, I had to rebuild libnotify or else zenity would fail to compile and firefox-bin on my amd64 laptop doesn't recognize the new Clearlooks and starts using the ugly default skin. I guess a new ebuild of the 32 bit compatible gtk-libraries binary is needed for this to be resolved.

Oh... I forgot: Had to retrieve a evolution-sharp ebuild with a patch that recognized the new evolution (a revdep-rebuild I do always after such a massive change asked me to recompile evolution-sharp or else I wouldn't have noticed this.)

I fixed this by modifying the /usr/share/themes/Clearlooks/gtk-2.0/gtkrc file and removing line 55 (ANIMATION=....) if memory serves; anyway launch a 32 bit GTK2 app from the terminal, you'll get an error about this file.

So I upgraded to gnome 2.16 and now my ram usage has more than quadrupled. Before when I was idle i'd use about 80 megs of memory, now I use about 400megs of memory idle.

I don't see the new Clearlooks theme, just the regular old one. Pretty sure I have the new gtk-engines emerged properly, does the gentoo build just not include the shiny newness in this case?

(Everything else is working fine - the evo exchange connector crashes every so often, but that's nothing new.)

Could you post the memory use of your computer?
For instance, the ouput of "ps -AF" (no bsd/gnu/posix troll plz).

Yeah, I don't want mono and java on my system. Then gnome 2.16 ebuild have a mono use flag in order to avoid to compile tomboy. You can think...they made "official" gnome dependent on mono... "just" for tomboy which, IMHO, is used by VERY few gnome users. Indeed this seems quite unreasonable... like enough gnome devs to vote for tomboy inclusion were... hu... "converted" to such ideas (dark shadows surround this incredible event).
BTW the stickynotes applet is still here.
Stickynotes is "politically" deprecated in favor of tomboy in order to force you to install mono. Indeed tomboy does not bring significant features to justfy the huge drawback of making "official" gnome dependent on a huge, complex, and so strategically dangerous framework like .net (mono).
My opinion: GPL software should stay as far as it can from the troublesome .net(mono) and java and for high level programming, less troublesome languages/framework should be used: python, ruby, perl, php, etc... You can check the gnome desktop devel list to make your own opinion (try to watch the movie 'thank you for smoking' replacing tabaco with mono to train you to the kind of talk you'll find there).
It remembers me the kind of "politics" of a proprietary software company do.

Something really fishy is happening in gnome devs community...

mono/C# is being actively promoted (outside of the GNOME project) as a full-featured, cross-platform, high-level development environment, largely in that it addresses a lot of what Java tried to do, and failed. For one, the licensing situation is a lot clearer - the patent/IP situation less so, but that's never stopped most users from using the scores of multimedia apps with "questionable" IP status (re: ffMPEG, LAME, FAAD, et. al).

While 2.16 doesn't rely heavily on GNOME, the GNOME project is attempting to make developing for GNOME an even better experience, by increasing the number of options available to the prospective developer. GNOME in C? Of course! GNOME in C++? Thanks to the *mm packages, you can! GNOME in Python! Hell yes! And now the *-sharp packages have opened up GNOME development to C# hackers.

While you may have well-reasoned (or not) feelings about the C# language and the .NET framework, it is in the GNOME project's best interest to provide for integration with as many applications (and hence, languages) as possible. Mono's inclusion in 2.16 ends C# developers' treatment as second-class citizens in the GNOME desktop. Tomboy is a nice little app, but it is not the ONLY reason for mono's inclusion.

And besides - I'm sure Gentoo will provide a mono USE flag for as long as it can, though it won't be long before it's a hard dependency of some of the GNOME libraries.

Did you ever tried the eye-sleeping java-desktop of Solaris? That's the way you want to go for a performance-dependent application like a windowmanager?
Why not offering a slim gnome without the mono-crap? No, it's forced because of marketing. I don't need any of the mono-gnome-shit. I've tried beagle, it produced more zombies than results, so I removed it from my system. Give me just the really beautiful GUI and I'm happy.

What's next? mono-kernel, because mono is soooooo beautiful and easy to learn? O.k., next step of absurdity would be a GUI built on top of OpenLaszlo.org (or, in other words: Macromedia Flash). Hey, btw., that would be the first windowmaker based on java (tomcat). Hooray, let's build a gui in OpenLaszlo! Sorry for being so cynical, but Novell sucks.

I have problems with yelp,firefox flag was recently disabled but it stills compiles against it and exits with error.I have seamonkey installed by yelp from a previous update and i don't have mozilla.Do I need mozilla or any particular version of firefox in order to compile yelp?

I just upgraded from 2.14 to 2.16 (in the process, I also upgraded glibc to 2.4 and gcc to 4.1) and this was by far the smoothest upgrade yet.

I'm not a big fan of he new "ClearLooks" theme, as it does funky things to my panel (it won't do 2 rows, just columns unlike Crux) and the curved windows at the top play tricks with my (horribly bad) eyes.

I'm also not a big fan of the C# bindings being *required* now. I think C# bindings are a good thing to have, but I'd like to see nothing but C/C++ bindings be mandatory for the platform. I understand why they did it, but I don't have to like it.

Aside from those 2 things (and my hatred of Metacity which goes back to gnome 2.0 and is still going strong) it's quite nice.

this gnome link about new UI features sez that while metacity supports compositing is enabled, you need your 3d drivers to support specific GLX_* function for it to work. for nvidia, i heard this means the 9xxx series of drivers....

Not yet enabled by default, new compositing affects are only available when Metacity is compiled with the special --enable-compositor option. The new compositing features also depend on support for the GLX_texture_from_pixmap extension, which is only available to owners of Intel i830 to i945, and ATI Radeon 7000 to 9250 chips at the present time. (Update: Nvidia has beta drivers supporting this extension; alternatively, the extension is available when using Xgl instead of Xorg)

Yep. Looking forward to those drivers, but the way nVidia releases things it'll be a while.

I had a GeForce 7900 GTX sitting in my drawer for a month and a week because nVidia didn't release drivers that were compatible with it for that long...

I honestly am not going to hold my breath for XGL or Compositing features to be stable (quality and API both) till 2.18 and even then it'll be "cutting edge"... I've seen it, I know it's possible, but with out jumping through a lot of hoops it isn't ready for production systems yet...

Has anyone been able to run tomboy 0.4.1?

It emerges and runs, but nothing shows up on the screen. When I run it from the console, it gives some warnings related to key bindings, and then it keeps running on the background or something but doesn't terminate.

I have serious problems to use Gnome 2.16 as User. As Root it works fine and realy fast. But as User i can login, but the Panel crashes, the Desktop switcher doesn't work and the Programs have no Frames (close, minimize, etc...). Looks like Metacity doesn't work for the User. But i don't have any more ideas how to fix the Problem. Maybe i need to set Metacity somerwhere as standard WM? Is it a problem with the permissions?

Already tried to set /tmp to 777 and recompiling gnome-panel and metacity, but it doesnt work.

If it works as root but not as your normal user, try creating a new user account and logging in with it - it could be related to your .gnome and .metacity preferences being corrupt or incompatible with this version...

If a new user works fine, you'll need to move/delete those dirs (and maybe others) but it'll prove it isn't a permissions issue... If it *doesn't* work as the new user, we'll have some more troubleshooting to do...

I'm using Gentoo w/ 2.16 on my desktop and Ubuntu Edgy w/ 2.16 on two different laptops. Gnome-terminal starts MUCH faster on the laptops, neither of which are as fast as the desktop is. Does anyone know why this might be? I think I resolved all my font problems but I suppose there could be some remaining problem there. Are there any debug outputs I can check or something to give me some idea why my Athlon 64 is opening stuff slower than a Pentium-M?
