Using: nvidia-installer ncurses user interface
-> License accepted.
-> No precompiled kernel interface was found to match your kernel; would you li
ke the installer to attempt to download a kernel interface for your kernel f
rom the NVIDIA ftp site (ftp://download.nvidia.com)? (Answer: Yes)
-> No matching precompiled kernel interface was found on the NVIDIA ftp site;
this means that the installer will need to compile a kernel interface for
your kernel.
-> Kernel source path: '/lib/modules/2.6.16-gentoo-r13/source'
-> Performing CC test with CC="cc".
-> Performing rivafb check.

Still receiving the errror above. Solution is that I need open GL installed. I have an NVIDIA MX440 64mb card.
Right now I have an ATI Driver that emulated the Driver, but it won't work for WOW

Why are you trying to manually install the FreeBSD version of the nvidia drivers on Gentoo *Linux*?

This is Gentoo, just run "emerge nvidia-drivers".

This is the error that I get when I do that. That Is why I was trying to manually do this
emerge nvidia-drivers
Calculating dependencies... done!

!!! Error: the media-video/nvidia-glx package conflicts with another package;
!!! the two packages cannot be installed on the same system together.
!!! Please use 'emerge --pretend' to determine blockers.

Virtual ~ # emerge --pretend nvidia-drivers

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

emerge --pretend nvidia-drivers

Even so, that still doesn't explain why you tried to install a FreeBSD version on linux...

I needed the open GL primarily. The applications that I want to use depend on this.

More importantly I guess is now I am getting an error of this and is preventing me now of doing an make on the new kernel
WARNING: /lib/modules/2.6.17-gentoo-r7/video/nvidia.ko needs unknown symbol _mmx_memcpy
WARNING: /lib/modules/2.6.17-gentoo-r7/video/nvidia.ko needs unknown symbol remap_page_range
WARNING: /lib/modules/2.6.17-gentoo-r7/video/nvidia.ko needs unknown symbol pci_find_class
I am even building from a make old config and this error is still preventing this
Any thoughts?

I have about two months of Linux usage ever. I started out with Gentoo. I am not impressed with Windows 2003 Domain Server. Junk in my opinion. Server 2000 was perfect, but these last few months with Linux I am beginning to realize even the whole theory of Windows is backwards. Anyway, I am new to Linux. Primarily I am just trying to update my Kernel from linux-2.6.16-gentoo-r13 to linux-2.6.17-gentoo-r7. Though I am getting this error which I have removed. Nonetheless I have removed the error and have finished rebuilding my Kernel. The whole reason I went to BSD is because I am having a Open GL driver error and the solutions I found were on Nvidia's web site. That is why.

If you are using BSD, then why are you posting to the Gentoo forums?

If you are using (trying to use) Gentoo, then why are you trying to install FreeBSD specific software?
when I install NVIDIA-FreeBSD-x86-1.0-8774.tar.gz

From reading his other posts in the forums, I think it is just a small language problem we have been having. I apologize if I have seemed frustrated and/or rude.

Seeing the error you are currently getting, I did a quick search of the forums and found many posts with the same errors, some with proposed solutions. Here is one that might help you: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-48 ... range.html

Because I didn't know. I understand that Gentoo Provided the driver for me and I am pointed to NVIDIA in my make.conf, but regardless of what I have done wrong my real question is why is my open GL failing??

That was one of the troubles I had with this was really understanding the uninstall. I had performed a procedure earlier in the day performed that very task, but was unsure if it worked correctly.
This is the error I am now getting.

OK. This is simple to fix. Run:

emerge -C nvidia-glx nvidia-kernel

Once that has finished run:

emerge nvidia-drivers

No errors. Nothing to clean. Although this is still returning this errror:
Your OpenGL drivers do not appear to be setup correctly. Please check the documentation for your Linux distribution and your graphics card drivers to ensure proper installation.

Did you follow the instructions that were displayed at the end of the nvidia-drivers emerge? They should have been left on the screen, but they may have scrolled up out of view. Anyway, you need to run, "eselect opengl set nvidia", in order to activate the nvidia opengl drivers after they have been installed.

Yes, I did pay attention, but the install went perfect. Then the latest update that I did to move the Open GL as the main interface for NVIDIA went smooth. I am working on the modprobe

Well obviously Asshole I don't understand what the modprobe thing is. Maybe instead of focusing on the problem you should try focusing on the solution or don't post, but thanks it nice to know that even the Linux users can be assholes. Just like Windows.

trye this:

the "$" is command line and the commands after end with a press on enter. and i dont know if u have x up and running @all now so i write it as commandline. (no expert tho)

1. if u r not root type su and give root password
2. add "nvidia" (type) to the file /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6

then do like this:

Code: Select all

$modprobe nvidia
$cd
$wget http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/nvidia-xconfig/nvidia-xconfig-1.0.tar.gz
$tar xvf nvidia-xconfig-1.0.tar.gz
$cd nvidia-xconfig-1.0
$make
$./nvidia-xconfig
$eselect opengl set nvidia
that should make u a working /etx/X11/xorg.conf with the nvidia settings. so restart or start x and c what happends

and it might help to read this: www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nvidia-guide.xml

regards
