When I run Xlaunch the application just moves to the background. I see it for a second and then it brings me back to KDM and if I login then I have two KDE sessions running on two XGl sessions and then the other thing running with Xlaunch. What's going on?

If you install compiz-start and follow my first post on page 7, you will get a compiz icon in your KDE system tray that will give you the option to use CSM to set options, change themes, and restart compiz. It also has an option to edit settings with gconf. But after I finally got things working on this machine, I found the gconf-editor settings didn't work. The CSM settings changes did.

I just updated to 426 (from 419), following my post above, on another machine and everything works! I also modified the compiz-start.py script further to remove the 'Edit with Gconf' option.

hi

i still have some problems running xgl on two screens from within gdm.

gdm.conf
[servers]
0=Xgl
1=Xgl

[server-Xgl]
name=Xgl
command=/usr/bin/Xgl -br -fullscreen -ac -accel glx:pbuffer -accel xv:fbo
chooser=false
flexible=true
handled=true
priority=0
/usr/local/bin/compiz-decorator
compiz --replace dbus csm &
sleep 2
#gnome-window-decorator &
cgwd &
every now and then my xgl-screen on the first vt (vt7) gets killed by no reason, mostly when switching from one vt to another or when switching from vt's to tty's and back ...no matter...

the x-server gets actually restarted by gdm, so i'm directly back on gdm's login-screen.

i'm using latest layman packages xgl, xorg-server, compiz-quinnstorm, cgwd and recompiled everything since the latest update-race ;)

poorly there are no messages in xorg's logs why it has been killed or whatever ...
the problem is for about one week now and i hoped it would be solved during latest updates.
i did see another thread somewhere with similar problems so i'm not alone....

thanx for any help in here !

It also has an option to edit settings with gconf. But after I finally got things working on this machine, I found the gconf-editor settings didn't work. The CSM settings changes did.
I finally decided to update for the first time yesterday since getting Xgl to run on my laptop a couple of weeks ago. dpshak, your quick tips helped save me a lot of time, and things worked almost right away (I had a typo I had to fix)! However, after updating some other stuff today and messing around with getting rid of some of the GNOME dependencies now that csm has replaced gconf-editor, I found that my edited 'compiz-start.py' script had been superceded by a new 316-byte shell script 'compiz-start'. In other words, the link that used to be there pointing to the edited 'compiz-start.py' script was gone and replaced by this shell script. Once I found this, of course, I simply renamed the shell script to 'compiz-start.sh' and then re-linked to 'compiz-start.py'. Everything worked as it had been for the last day or so at that point!

Jupiter1TX, I'm not sure if you have the same problem I did or not, but thought I would share it in case it helps.

p.s. the path for those files was '/usr/bin'... and don't forget to do an 'rc-update add dbus default' so that you get the live theming updates!

Janax, I'm glad those tips were useful! BTW, I created a backup to compiz.start.py with my current settings - just in case is gets overwritten during an update. This way, I can compare the differences between the new and old scripts, make any changes that are needed, and relink to compiz-start!

tried every single step suggested in this forum but damn thing doesn't work. no cube and no rotation. all the plugins dont work. changed everthing with csm but still with the same results.

cgwd and compiz-quinnstorm-0.0.13.20 work.

am thinking the kdm server command could be the problem. this is mine;

ServerCmd=/usr/bin/Xgl -br -ac -accel glx:pbuffer -accel xv:pbuffer
this is a strange strange world.

Strange. For me with my Logitech LX300 it did not start, but as soon as I commented out my mouse-settings. What is your settings for the keyboard and the mouse?

I have the same ServerCmd in mine. I don't know what other steps you have taken, but I am running the CVS versions (-9999*) of compiz-quinnstorm, cgwd, etc. I had the same problem of no window decorations, but found that compiz was crashing whenever it was invoked (found that out by stepping through the launch process line-by-line in a Konsole). Re-compiling compiz-quinnstorm seemed to make it work. Don't know what caused that, but who am I to argue!

btw, I am running an ~amd64 system with pretty much Conrad-3.0.2's setup (gcc 4.1.1-r1, hashvals=both, patched glibc, etc).

As Janax said, I don't think that's the problem - mine is the same. When I had a problem trying to figure out what wasn't working I would troubleshoot from the terminal to remove any influence from KDE.

1. startx - on my box, this brings up 3 xTerm windows and that FANCY :roll: clock.
2. at the prompt in one xTerm window, enter:

Code: Select all

Xgl :1 -br -ac -accel glx:pbuffer -accel xv:pbuffer
This brings up a window labelled XGL - with a black/grey interior
3. at a prompt in the next xTerm window, enter

Code: Select all

DISPLAY=:1 dbus-launch compiz dbus csm
This will - if compiz is working - turn the XGL window blue and load the dbus and csm plugins.
4. at a prompt in the next xTerm window, enter

Code: Select all

DISPLAY=:1 dbus-launch cgwd
No change in the XGL window but this will load the current windows decoration manager.
5. Oops, need another xTerm window, enter

Code: Select all

DISPLAY=:1 csm
This will launch csm with windows decorations in the XGL window.

I just double checked all of this on my machine - Homebuilt AMD64x2 4400, Abit AN8-Fata1ity SLI mobo, NForce4 (CK804) chipset, and Nvidia FX 6600GT video - because of things like csm and dbus and all of that.

Oops mashed the submit button too soon...

If any of those step along the way don't work, you know where to look to fix the problem! Good Luck!

Oh, by the way, compiz-quinnstorm-0.0.13.43: compiz-quinnstorm-plugins-0.13:csm-0.4 was what I'm using for this message. I was going to upgrade to the current but I guess the files aren't there :?:

The "state" plugin does not appear under csm-0.4. Does somebody know if it has been removed?

What's happened since compiz-quinnstorm-20???

  • Quote

Post by lsm » Fri Sep 08, 2006 12:39 am

Since compiz-quinnstorm-20, much seems broken, my configuration files seem close to useless, rotation is slower and "recessed", my keyboard shortcuts almost all fail.

Perhaps there is a need to wipe and start over if you're using the latest like compiz-quinnstorm-47???

I'd appreciate any insight into how to upgrade from a -20 vintage, preserving configuration if possible.

I don't know about preserving old settings, I know that compiz.schemas for gconf-editor have recently gone away(found that out the hard way) - I suppose you could protect that file and all your current settings on an update but I don't know for sure. Besides, the new csm tool (that replaces gconf-editor) is, to me, a much better tool - and the cgwd tool (replaces gnome-window-decorator) allows you to change windows themes just like KDE! For me? Much better!

I actually like that the windows "recess" before rotating - it gives me time to stop the rotation BEFORE it rotates when I lose control of the mouse (Damn trackballs anyway!) :lol:

A couple days ago when everyone seemed to be having upgrade problems I ran into one myself that doesn't seem to have come up. My Xgl server (started via gdm) now only shows on one display instead of two. The X log shows that twinview seems to be going properly, the second monitor is definitely on and not in standby, but the mouse is confined to one screen and there's no gdm login box. I'm guessing that's on the second display, wherever that output got sent.

Has anyone else had trouble with dual monitors in the past week or so? I should probably mention that at the same time as I upgraded the xgl package I also updated to xorg-7.1, so it'll be difficult to tell which caused the problem :-( My only clue so far is an error at the bottom of my X log about the keyboard:

Code: Select all

(EE) Error loading keymap /usr/share/X11/xkb/compiled/server-94.xkm
And I don't even know if that error is related. I don't get that error with regular X. Anyone have an idea what might be causing the second monitor to not work?

I have a question for you guys. Say I want to run Cedega. How would I fire up XOrg in another display and then run Cedega in there?
Did you have any luck? Or is anybody else having the same problem I posted on the page earlier with the CVS version of compiz-quinnstorm? Currently I'm running the old 0.13.48 version as that compiles fine, it's just the CVS version (csm and compiz-quinnstorm-plugins CVS compile fine).

Hello,

Apart for the current update problem (missing mesa/libGL.a); I have a problem since I updated portage-xgl overlay.
I'm positive Xgl is running fine, however from csm (0.4 only, can't update to 0.8 ), all plugins are loaded, but no effects whatsoever, and no window decoration at all.

I'm using KDE with kdm. My /usr/local/bin/compiz-decoration is
compiz --replace dbus csm &
sleep 2
cgwd &
Did I miss some configuration change since 3 weeks ago (last update) ?
Thanks in advance.

Are you sure Xgl is launched by kdm ? To start compiz, you can use the script compiz-start installed by latest versions of compiz-quinnstorm.

I just took a peek in quinnstorms cvs repo and it seems like a whole mesa 6.5.1 distrib is now included in compiz-quinnstorm (which is not included in the distfile for 0.0.13.48, resulting in the error above)

You could try changing that last line to

Code: Select all

dbus-launch cgwd &
or try the script as ilmara recommended which is at /usr/bin/compiz-start. if you use the script, you will have to change /etc/env.d/99kde-env to reflect the change in startup methods.
