8O I have an ODD problem with these drivers. KDE starts outside the screen limits! I cant even imagine how to debug it! My gnome is broken, so I cant try that, KDM is fine but KDE has not a single window on sight but everything runs!

EDIT: I think I must atribute this to the compiler magic I had to correct to install the driver :(

Excuse me for being ignorant, but what are XGL, aixgl, xv? IIRC xvmc is X video motion compensation and gl in those previous acronyms points to opengl video acceleration, right? Also I get confused with composite. Your now talking about desktop items being transparent, and not about some video-out interface?

So with the latest driver the ABI breakage with X 7.1 is fixed. That's nice but someone could explain what it means. I assume xvmc is still broken. Is opengl acceleration now working?
Everything can be done. There's just a longer delivery time for impossible projects.

You can always get transparent/shadow by enabling composite extension of Xorg(since 6.8), without XGL or AIGLX.

Yeap, it works fine. The older drivers has lock-up problem when running XGL on smp system, the 8774 is solid stable w/XGL on Xorg 7.1

I guess this is the meaning of "Improved interaction with newer Linux kernels." :)

no , last driver nvidia with 7.1 xorg = problem with keybord :
with XGL I have no more alt GR (i'm french) , and with normal xorg, I have no more the ctrl-alt-+ and ctrl-alt- - to change resolution ...
So , I keept last drivers nvidia, but I moved back to xorg 7.0 , and everything work fine now .

Hmmm.
The new driver has crashed on me 2 times in 2 days. This isn't good. And I'm working from home today, so I can't go and do massive recompiles :(
Anyone else out there having crash issues?

Not a single problem in over a week's use.
Was there any meaningful output in /var/log/Xorg.0.log half the crash? (before restarting)

I needed to get the computer back up, cause I was supposted to be working. To get it back after it crashes, I need to log in remotely, and I was in a hurry to get the box up so I wouldn't be late for work. next time it happens, I'm going to review it. I'm going to recompile the nvidia drivers after work tonight also. Since they're wrapped binaries, I don't know if it will help though.

I am in the same boat - two blackouts for two days, I was able to regain the system through ssh, starting X and killing it, the problem is that X dies and after that I could not switch to console or anything (the screen stays just black), although the system works just fine in the meantime, no excessive cpu or memory usage. I think that it has sth to do with java, as I had eclipse and jboss running in the both cases and I was working in eclipse.
There was something about glibc double corruption, I'll look at it the next time it happens :(

I just upgraded the java system so I could use azureus to download a torrent. I can't say if that had anything to do with it or not, since I haven't looked at th xorg log file yet. It's running from an ssh session from my gaming box, so I'll be rebooting it to get into WoW tonight. It sounds similar to your's accept I didn't have a blank screen. It was mangled color lines. But still, no vt access, no heavy cpu crunching and memory usage. All it was doing this morning was playing xmms tunes until it crashed. I didn't notice until I realized I slept in later then I was supposed to. Need to get this fixed before the end of the Labor Day Holiday LoL. I wish I had remembered to copy the xorg.log file this morning.

nvidia never work to me ;(

I would like to ask you politely if there is someone who had my problem and know how to fix it and can help ;)

We have in our office geForce 6600, AMD64, Asus board with nVidia chipset BOX. We have been unable to get it working with nvidia driver. We have tried 3 diferent cards, also other chipsets boards and various versions of x.org and nvidia prop. drivers (all from ebuilds). Also studied nvidia gentoo guide, foras etc.
The problem is the x.org after xdm start freeze. The X process consums 100% CPU and there is blank screen ;(

Only nv driver works right.

If there is someone to help me it will be mostly appriciated.

Just wanted to say that I've been using the new drivers with xorg 7.1 (xorg-server 1.1.1) for 6 days and have not had any problems. Yes, composite gives plenty of artifacts (using KDE's kompmgr), but no crashes or any other crazy stuff. I am NOT using evdev, though. And I read about problem with it all the time, so I want start using evdev, either. :) What would the advantages of evdev be?

I'm using these with XOrg 7.0.

The nasty bug in the above thread is still there and it's been 8 months since it was first reported. nVidia, bahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!

A single driver for all your input devices. I've found it a bit problematic at the moment (keyboard support is patchy).

Problems with X.Org 7.1 and 8774

  • Quote

Post by adinu79 » Fri Sep 01, 2006 10:16 am

Hi.

I'm having a little trouble with the 8774 drivers and X.Org 7.1.

The most annoying one is the fact that if I enable the GLX extension and use eselect opengl set nvidia, the server refuses to start throwing a Caught Signal 11. Server Aborted error.

If I don't enable the extension, I still get the occasional hang up of the system, where I have to kill X via ssh and restart it.

I have a Geforce 4 MX 440

Any ideas?

Hmmm. I thought everything was working OK, but the last couple of days I've been having periodic total system lockups (requiring a hard reset) while scrolling down websites in Firefox. I wonder if the nvidia drivers are to blame? Unfortunately with Xorg 7.1 now installed, going back to the earlier drivers is a non trivial issue.

I'm gonna guess that lots of people made the switch to xorg-7.1 and the new drivers at the same time, so finding the real culprit might be hard.
Maybe a good idea is to use a very basic xorg.conf with all features turned off first.

in fact I have had xorg 7.1 with the old drivers and haven't had it crashing, the only thing was the update to the newest nvidia. On a side note I haven't had anymore crashes in the last days.
I have looked around and it seems that there are such known crashes - there was a ubuntu forum topic about them, they are triggered by some strings 8O
At least it seems that on exactly three synaptics updates from a special sort, the xorg server dies and gdm restarts - this bug was acknowledged from nvidia and the fix will come with 9xxx series.
