Might want to hold out on that a bit, AMD is considering open sourcing former-ATI graphics drivers, at least a large part.

they either open source it or risk losing business, they can't afford not to, they wanna take on Intel, they have to take every edge they can and this is one of them. I'm making all future hardware purchase decisions on the support for linux and open-source-ness.. I'd encourage everybody else to do the same so that they have incentive to follow our demands...

Well, ATI has just said they're not open sourcing their drivers. Whether that changes after AMD finishes buying them out or not is yet to be seen.

how disappointing, I've just hit this problem as well, I can't emerge the ati drivers and I am running the latest stable xorg-server and xorg-x11 and when I try to emerge the ati drivers I get the following:

It doesn't say they want to open source "a large part." It says a "functional subset." As has been pointed out, this would likely be the equivalent of nvidia and the nv driver.

When you get the ABI modules mismatch (when trying to run X) you just add the tag ignoreABI

you can run the newest nvidia drivers on xorg 7.1 just do this:

just a note- nvidia-drivers is masked (i think) so use your architecture to unmask. if you are unsure of your arch, use ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86"

Don't use ACCEPT_KEYWORDS like that on the command line. /etc/portage/package.keywords is meant for it. If you use it on the command line, it will be valid for this one particular emerge, but will fallback to arch (not ~arch) on any future update (unless you write ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=... for every future 'emerge world' etc.). Read the Portage sections of the manual for more info.

Guess I was lucky. I never bothered with that list. When I unmasked xorg-7 originally, I just unmasked individual packages one at a time. And since I had VIDEO_CARDS and INPUT_DEVICES set in make.conf I was able to avoid unmasking a lot.

In any case, since xorg-7 is in stable, you can remove all of those from that list and you'll revert to having xorg-7.

Then, if you want xorg-7.1 you should add "=x11-base/xorg-7.1 ~x86" to the package.keywords then unmask each package it asks for that are still masked.

Even if Nvidia say their new driver works with Xorg 7.1 ist must just be tested before the ebuilds can be modified. I hope we will have the necessary ebuilds soon.

Also, can anyone confirm (someone where the drivers did not work before) that these new drivers work with xorg7.1? I can't be the one because they have always worked for me even though they shouldn't.

Yes I'm on a amd64 (very ~amd64) and have gotten xorg 7.1 and the new nvidia drivers to work properly. You just need to modify the xorg-server and nvidia-driver ebuilds, there are 3 lines in the xorg-server under the RDEPEND section that block glx,kernel, and drivers, remove these (don't forget to keep that closing quotation mark!!!!). In the nvidia ebuild just remove the line !>=x11-base/xorg-server-<some version number>. Emerge and rejoice.

Currently running with the 7.1.1 Xorg, 8774 drivers, and xorg-server version 1.1.1
