kernel processor config question

this is probably a silly question. Currently my proccessor type is set to x86_64. I was wondering if I set it to AMD64 would I have to recompile all packages in my install?? is it considered a different architecture or is it more or less the same??

I don't think so. AFAIK gcc does not take into account what architectures the kernel is supposed to support..
