Can I install Linux Gentoo and have Windows at the same time

Having problems with the Gentoo Handbook? If you're still working your way through it, or just need some info before you start your install, this is the place. All other questions go elsewhere.

Yes you can, but do you have a spare partition for Linux? If you don't use GPartEd liveCD to reisize your Windows partition. Also I would suggest you start with something other than Gentoo, like Ubuntu or Suse. Gentoo is a bit difficult at first.

Some games can be run on linux, but most can't.
The windows applications you name don't run on linux, but for most there are alternatives that do run on linux.

You can't run windows and linux simultaneously, unless you run linux under windows with colinux or in a vmware virtual machine or run windows in vmware under linux. Otherwise you'll have to reboot and select the other operating system if you want to switch.

You can try linux without having to install it on you harddisk by booting a linux livecd like knoppix or ubuntu. Those linux distributions run entirely from the cd.

Other than gaming, there are Linux substitues for most windows apps. Gaim can be used for AIM and MSN etc.

Gentoo is pretty challenging to install for new Linux users. Ever bothered to look at the docs?

if you are a serious gamer you'll want to check the compatability lists for wine and cedega because those are about your only options for games that don't run on linux natively.

Well I believe that starting with Gentoo would be a good way to start with linux. Since the docs have literally *every* command you need to install Linux, it makes it quite easy. So it would be a good way for him to learn. Plus there's always the forums and #gentoo if he has a problem. :)

Age doesn't matter, all you need is effort and guts to do new stuff.
There are many people who are aged like you or even younger than you in those who use gentoo.

I was twelve when I first installed Gentoo, without many problems at all. I had installed Ubuntu when I was eleven but gor tired of it and wanted Gentoo :). So age doesn't matter, as opentaka said.

way I see it, the important thing with gentoo is that you understand hardware to a certain standard. A complete n00b will not fare well but as long as you understand what your hard drive, processor, memory, graphics card and the such are, then you should be able to handle the gentoo install since the handbook does hold your hand all the way through the installation and some other bits

Once you have a linux distribution installed onto your computer, you have the option of installing a boot loader (grub lilo etc)
When you switch on your computer, you will be given the option of booting into ANY other operating system you have on your computer at that time.

Yes the x86 one. Sempron = x86 (btw it's Sempron not SemPORN :P ).

just a thought but newer pemprons are 64bit so the handbook you'd want might be the 64 one. You can use both though. the x86 handbook will have more compatibility with programs whereas the AMD64 handbook will make better use of your processor, theoretically anyway
