It's another, older version of the kernel that was used when the 2006.0 release was created. The kernel you are looking at is a 2.6.17 kernel that is far more recent. No problem, actually less so, since there are security bugs fixed in 2.6.17 that would still be in 2.6.15

Uh, because uname -r shows you the version of the kernel that is currently booted and running (the LiveCD one), and ls -l /usr/src shows you what kernel source tree you have on your hard drive. Apples and oranges there .

The explanation is that uname is telling you the name of the running kernel and /usr/src/linux contains the sources for the kernel you are about to build.
