Ok guys, lets think about this KDE 3.5.4 ... Before Released

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

Ok guys, lets think about this KDE 3.5.4 ... Before Released

Ok,

I have been a avid Gentoo user for quite a while now. I have recently run into the problem of doing a system upgrade where it wants to install kde 3.5.4 BEFORE IT WAS RELEASED!?! Ok, I know what is going on. The gentoo kde package maintainers are inserting the ebuilds into the tree so that as soon as the sources are released we can install them. The problem is that this blocks our updates while we wait for the kde team to release. Now, I am aware that I could just wait and upgrade other packages in the mean time, but that is a pain. I like my "emerge -uDv world" command. So, I would like to propose that the kde package maintainer (the ebuild dudes and dudets) go ahead and populate the portage tree with the ebuilds but then hard mask them until the sources are truly released. In this fashion people can still perform the updates and the kde ebuild maintainers can debug the ebuilds (but using their local unmask). I think this is a happy compromise that grants the most usability and functionality to both sides of the fence. What do you all think?

Justace

P.S. I know I am running ~x86 and these ebuilds have not been moved to x86 but I think to purposly break an update for this reason, even in ~x86, is unjustified.

kde-3.5.4 is hard masked in /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask here. Are you sure your own package.unmask is correct?

Any idea when the tarballs will appear?

Seems arts 3.5.4 is available.... but not the others yet. I assume this is getting real CLOSE :)

For arts-3.5.4, the current ebuild actually fetchs the 3.5.3 package...

duh.. that's obvious. I was asking more of a general feel for the timing though. Not simply "when ready".

I know it's already tagged, so it's close... but is that 2-3 days or 2-3 weeks... get it?

I'd guess it's days, not weeks.

Here are stats for previous versions: (sorry if I did some mistake, I wrote it quickly)

-------------------------------------------------------------
3.5.4 24 July 2006 ???
3.5.3 23 May 2006 31 May 2006 8
3.5.2 17 March 2006 28 March 2006 11
3.5.1 20 January 2006 31 January 2006 11
3.4.3 5 October 2005 13 October 2005 8
