I "upgraded" to Gnome 2.14 a few days ago.
They've finally fixed Metacity!! You don't have to edit the source to get rational focus behavior anymore. Huzzah!
Then I tried to shutdown the laptop. The "Logout" button which has worked very nicely in the last several versions of Gnome is now broken. You no longer have the options to "shut down" or "restart" -- now you can "logout" or "switch users". Switch users appears to be identical to logging out, I'm not sure why there are two options. In any case, you can go back to the login prompt -- or not, no other choices.
This is a laptop. I "logout" maybe once every couple of months, only when I have some reason to log in as root and sudo won't do the job. I SHUT DOWN every day, sometimes multiple times.
Can someone tell me what the name of the Gnome shutdown/logout applet is? Is there a way I can graft the 2.12 applet into a 2.14 system, or do I have to completely remove 2.14 and go back to 2.12? With 2.12, Metacity is broken, but I can FIX that. If I have to fix 2.14 in order to be able to use it, that will be fine, as long as I CAN fix it. I may let the desktop machines use 2.14 as it currently stands, because I only shut them down every several months or so, usually when the UPS gives out or something similar, so the shutdown buttons don't matter much there.
KDE does the right thing (just like it has always doen the right thing with focus) but it's so UGLY. I've been using it for the last couple of hours, and I don't think I'm going to be able to get used to it.
Please, if someone knows what I can change to get the shutdown button to work right again, please let me know.
