I'm on AMD64, but I suppose the fix will be broadly the same across arches:

Code: Select all

emerge myspell-en
eselect oodict set myspell-en
I had to put "app-dicts/myspell-en ~amd64" into /etc/portage/package.keywords first. I also have

Code: Select all

LINGUAS=en_GB
in my /etc/make.conf. You may also need to modify that to suit your language.

Obviously if you don't want the english dictionary choose your own.

Sorry...I don't know. I've never had to do that, and I only have the one dictionary installed. I had a quick Google around, but couldn't turn up much. Have a play around with the eselect module. Maybe it will allow you to set two dictionaries?

Hey lo-jay,

you can set 2 dictionaries.

Code: Select all

todesengel matt # eselect oodict set myspell-en myspell-de
todesengel matt # eselect oodict show
OpenOffice.org configured dictionaries
  [1] myspell
    Configured language codes from /usr/share/myspell:
      de en

hmm good question, I dunno.

Try to re-emerge myspell-en and myspell-de and try again.
I just tried it with 2 other dictionaries and it was successful.

Thanks for the tip, I would never have guessed why my spelling checker wasnt working when I clearly had gibberish
I didn't notice that It wasnt working until my boss asked me why I couldn't spell a certain word...and I remembered having spell checked the document.

sigh,,,, I SHOULDNT return w/o an error if its not using ANY dictionary what so ever....

I know what you mean. I almost hit the same problem.

I think it would have made a lot of sense to have an error message when you run spellcheck without a dictionary. Specially when they do not pack a default dictionary with openoffice.

I had the same problem. Doing

Code: Select all

# eselect oodict set myspell-en myspell-fr
Only gave me the English dictionary. Then I tried selecting the French dictionary separately, and that worked for me:

Code: Select all

# eselect oodict set myspell-fr
# eselect oodict show
OpenOffice.org configured dictionaries
  [1] myspell
    Configured language codes from /usr/share/myspell:
      en fr
I don't know if this is an architecture-specific thing or not. (I'm on AMD64)

Right, it didn't work here, found this thread, installed myspell-en, myspell-nl and myspell-de, the three languages I would like spell checking in. But still no spellchecking at all. OpenOffice claims only support for spanish has been installed, which is one I haven't got on my system.

I'm using openoffice-bin by the way.
