audacity can just record one mono line

Help with creation, editing, or playback of sounds, images, or video. Amarok, audacious, mplayer, grip, cdparanoia and anything else that makes a sound or plays a video.

audacity can just record one mono line

hi

when i try to record multiply tracks in one audacity project, only the first recorded mono track sounds like it should. wenn i record another track over that first track, the second track is just crappy shit, like low quality growling in death metal or somethin like that

when i record tracks in stereo, i didnt got that problem. but that is no solution since recording in stereo results in only a left-channel sound.

so i would like to record mono.

on that machine, i got a parallel windows install. its just for gp4 and especially audacity. audacity on windows works fine with multiply mono tracks.
ironically, audacity should work under gnu/linux, too. but i got the problem as described.

its a soundblaster live 5.1, everything else works fine (as far as i can see). the input is connected to line-in.

/edit without "play other tracks while recording new one" it works like it should, but i really need this....

ok i tried this piece of software, but hardly understand anything.

i read some stuff in the manuel, but i even cant record something. i create a session and a track, fired up the mixer window. when i play somethin on my guitar, the mixer noise bars gets up, so there is a signal

but i cant really record somethin. when i hit record, the button went pink, as described in the manuel. but there is no cursor moving on, showing what is recorded so far on a timeline. i also got no waveform or anything. so nothing really happens when i click on the record button.

whats the deal with just record something with ardour?

/edit solved:
<tapas> and then press the big record button
<tapas> and then you press play to start rolling
their channel is very nice

In audacity, playing back while recording only seems to work if you record in stereo for some reason.

Put very simply, audacity can't record in mono under linux whilst playing back other tracks because it ends up playing in stereo and recording in mono. This would be fine if you had native OSS audio drivers, but you don't you have ALSA + the OSS emulation modules.

The emulation modules can't cope with the differing numbers of record and replay channels, and so the problems you describe.

In the short term, the solution is that you record in stereo, then click on the track name to get the track pop-down menu, and select "Split stereo track". You now have two mono tracks, one with your recording and one with nothing. Click on the X at the top left of the junk one to delete it, and then use the pop-down menu on the track you want to change it from "Left" to "Mono". It will then play out of both speakers and behave exactly like the mono track you recorded does.

Well ardour is a Digital Audio Workstation, that means that recording sound is one of the main aim of ardour... ;-)

While using ardour, did you check your jack connections via qjackctl?
