Stable or Unstable Install

Post by uxbod » Sat Jul 08, 2006 9:51 am

Hi All,

I have been running with ~amd64 for sometime now, but very recently have started to encounter a lot of hard lockups. Now, my question is how well has the stable branch matured as I am thinking about backing up, wiping the disks and reinstalling with just amd64.

All comments greatfully appreciated.

My system is amd64, but I run a lot of ~amd64 packages.

I don't have too many problems, nothing I would blame on the fact that it's a 64-bit installation.

Edit: Just noticed your sig... that is one nice system.

 Stable :?: <She asks.>

Based on 2006.0 cd and toolchain. Maybe. Who knows. If it runs on my system it's stable.

Simply try
and keep wondering
what combinations would
give someone else problems
so they would start calling it unstable.
:? Give adaptive answers to unknown problems!

Hard lockups are *Usually* a sign of over aggressive fCFLAGS, or an impending hardware problem... I've been running unstable on my dual opteron box for *Years* and haven't had any lockups. My CFLAGS are fairly conservative.

Seems rather FUDdish to me; hard lockups cannot be caused by agressive CFLAGS, unless the CFLAGS are somehow forced on the kernel or loaded kernel module. Programs where it would matter (glibc, binutils, etc...) the CFLAGS are filtered. Other symptoms are overheating CPU, MCEs, etc... but using crappy CFLAGS will pretty much net you, worst case, with a broken compile or broken program.

I run a stable only system, I never have lock up problems. I would try it and see what happens.
