I removed the stupid poster thingy on the about page but a handful of developers threw a hissy fit and someone else put it back up. I got a consensus to change it to text with a little Larry icon next it but I've lost interest for the moment. I'll get around to it eventually.rafo wrote:There is a Linux distro that exposes its mascot heavily: http://www.puppylinux.org/. There is a puppy on just about each and every one of their webpages.
Gentoo, on the other hand, is claimed to have a mascot, but it is exposed in only one place (correct?): http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/about.xml. The storybook style of presentation doesn't exactly harmonize with the otherwise crisp and to-the-point style of the Gentoo web, and many newcomers probably fail to notice that the cow is a mascot at all. Then again there are users and developers that have been around for a long time and find the mascot an absolutely essential thing. One may speculate about the future of the cow, here are a few directions that it could go![]()
A. It will catch on, the storybook bit will somehow be put in a context so that newcomers see why it is cool, cute, Gentooish and essential heritage, and we will see the cow in lots of places. Later on the name Gentoo is dropped in favor of "Bos" (Bos primigenius: latin for cow). The metal "g" is re-cast as a metal "b". Legal hassle with Tucows taking lots of energy but considered worth the price. Bos Linux gradually becoming the preferred platform for all sorts of agriculture applications and services worldwide.
B. It will be moved to a Gentoo heritage/nostalgia page, allowing the "about" page to explain what Gentoo is about in a neutral style.
C. Neither; it will stay on the "about" page and that's it. "If the creators of a distro can afford to keep that childish stuff on the about-page then it must be really good to make up for it."

Larry is part of the Gentoo family, and half of you sound like you wanna throw him on the muck heap, after all the hard work he has done.
Well if he is disowned as the Gentoo mascot, I shall *ADOPT* him before defecting to SuSE
He has to stay. Gentoo wouldn't be Gentoo without our Larry !
*changes domain name to 'Larry' and hostname to 'moo' in protest*
To me the page does not look more childish then Vista announcement pages and more alive then Oracles Internet presentaiton.massctrl wrote:They don't understand the humor and think it's childish. I don't blame them they are risking their neck. Even customers don't understand the humor behind it. And hell you can't blame them either.
An operating system shouldn't be funny at all, it needs to leave a professional and serious first impression!
It gives the impression it's all a joke.

It would be easier for people to figure out the gentoo name and easier to associate the distro with linux (Tux's cousin?). The gentoo penguin can easily be drawn in a way as to differentiate it from tux and still be funny. BTW there are penguins still on the homepage.
I've also never liked the gentoo logo. I don't use gentoo because of the logo, but you might sell more shirts if it was different. I think I would be more incline to buy a shirt with larry the cow's face on it, than the "g".
I didn't use gnome back in the day because of the name and the dumb logo! Its a foot!! lolcurtis119 wrote:bluedevils wrote:If the distro is *really* good, it doesn't matter what the mascot is. You don't use Gentoo because of the logo........?

Heheheh, I think he meant, he uses Gentoo for reasons other than the logocurtis119 wrote:bluedevils wrote:If the distro is *really* good, it doesn't matter what the mascot is.
