Quake 3 multi player freezing

In order to start quake with sound it use the command

echo "quake3.x86 0 0 direct" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss

but when I do this the multi player will freeze when I join games but I can play the single player does anyone know why this happens or is there another way to get the sound working?

try this one, and try get the error message you get.

Sorry to resurrect the thread.... but I am having this same problem.

I had to do the same thing for my soundcard but now I get the freeze when trying to start a multiplayer game.

Anyone know how to fix this?

I figured it out... had to turn the music volume all the way down when using this "echo" method... the music makes it crash.

Sorry, no, but just guess.
try this before launching the game
As root type:

chmod 666 /dev/mixer*
chmod 666 /dev/dsp*

It worked for me in Slackware. If it does'nt try the last post here
