I've never had any problems with Larry. Something different. One of the things that drew me to Gentoo was Larry's "about gentoo page".

Gentoo really doesn't even need a mascot, the logo is good enough.

I love Larry!

A cow is the ideal mascot!

Cows are very intelligent. They even enjoy solving problems (theregister had a lot of stuff about it).
Cows are cute.
Cows are very patient (patience is something every gentoo user needs at least once).
Cows have a very, very high resistance against pain! (something, that every gentoo user needs sometimes)
Cows rebound very well after injuries (you can bork your gentoo system, but you almost never need to reinstall - no matter how borked it is)
Cows are very insensitive to filth (every gentoo user knows the feeling when the users of other distris laugh about him as a ricer).
Cows are usefull.
Cows taste great.

Any more reasons, why cows are great animals and even greater mascots?

Gah - not so long ago we were having this debate about FEATURES="candy". Quirks like this are part of why I love open source - it really makes it feel like it's made by real people, not some big faceless corportation.

I say, unless it's getting in the way, leave it where it is.

And for those of you who'd get rid of it because of the whole "transexual" thing - first, a cow is a cow, and I didn't notice that a "Larry" shouldn't have udders until it was pointed out. Second, get a grip! You're impressing no-one with your fake machismo, implying that everything with even a whiff of sexual deviance is bad. Using a distro with an obscure mascot whose name doesn't match its sex isn't going to make you gay.

Leave poor Larry alone!

Larry is funny, and definitely odd - which isn't a bad thing.

However, I think that Larry could do with an upgrade. Perhaps we should take a leaf from Dana Lyons...

What about creating a "Larson the Bull"? He can be Larry's "husband". Then we may think of gentoo users as a kind of a family.

If you prefer, every gentoo release can present a new son of Larson and Larry.

Or Larson ("the cow") can be the gay boyfriend of Larry (and Larry will be the gay boyfriend of Larson). Then, all gentoo users could be considered a kind of a Gay movement. And the G logo could represent it. We could then create a coloured G.

No, I didn't do them. I would have just linked to the Gentoo wallpaper page, but then noone would have seen the exact ones I wanted them to see. They were created by Tero Konttila. And a lot of the IT expansion is happening in india right now, no?

So I reccon a cool Idea would be having this mean ass cow floating on a cloud, with big fat-ass wings protruding from its back, and a pretty golden halo on its head, but the cow be all leaning to one side on the cloud trying to look cheeky and seductive, all "sex-kitten" like.

I prefer to think as "cow" being just a species, and therefor not being male or female, but a generic, which means its for everyone, males AND females ( and people devoid of a sexuality too.. the poor buggers ).

But making it a "holy cow", makes all the extra bonuses, we could have a winged flying cow ( not a flying pig mind

) going round in a cupid-esque way shooting love arrows at peeps for valintines day. Larry the holy cow also saves us from that evil bastard bill gates and his army of demons >_>.
We have have cool ass christmas nativity scenese with a comically placed larry the cow in it even. Imagine substituting larry the cow into any of michelangelos well known masterpieces, fits and geeky giggles galore!

And if larry happens to be female, well, we can start exploiting the well known phrases "Got milk?", and "My Milkshakes are better than yours, i'd teach you.. but i'd have to charge" etc. etc. etc.

GENTOO IS SECHY!. <3

( apologies for looking like an angsty teenage rant, when I get masses of ideas like this i just have to spit them down in the order they occur, and i've just had 2Grams of Taurine ( see, gentoo user to the core
