glxgears performance as root/non-root? <SOLVED>

hmm... yeah this is a newbie question, but here it goes:

why is there a decrease in performance of glxgears when I run it as a user? it was laggy as choppy and have a fps of about 300. when I su to root, the performance shot way up to about 6000 fps.

does anyone know why it's like that?

I would assume the issue lies with permissions in access to 3d hardware acceleration. The 300 fps you mention is similar to that which I get using Mesa 3d and no acceleration. Unfortunately, I am not sure which files (or user groups) to point you to to clear this up. This should at least give a direction to look.

since this is affecting my glxgears, it could be affecting my overall grapihcs performace also?

it most definitely is.

There is a DRI section at the botton of your xorg.conf file.

Inside there is like a group line and a chmod line usually.

You can either a) comment the lines out or b) join yourself to the video group.

At least I am betting that will fix you.

Add this to your xorg.conf, reboot X, and you will be golden (since you are in the video group):
