emerge -uD world error (package blocking)

  • Quote

Post by bpont » Wed May 31, 2006 4:42 am

Code: Select all

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating world dependencies .. ...done!
[blocks B ] sys-apps/pam-login (is blocking sys-apps/shadow-4.0.15-r2)
[ebuild U ] app-admin/perl-cleaner-1.04 [1.03-r1]
[ebuild U ] sys-apps/shadow-4.0.15-r2 [4.0.14-r1]
How do I resolve this?

Check the ChangeLog. It tells you have to unmerge pam-login first.

Unmerge pam-login and then run your update command again. Do one right after the other. *Don't* log out in between.

(i.e. emerge -C pam-login && emerge -uDN world) ((or whatever update command you were using to produce the error))

Edit: Doh!! Second post in a row in which I was too slow.

Yeah, this just happened to me. Just do emerge -C on pam-login, then do the update. The new shadow package provides all the stuff you need from pam-login. It'd be nice if portage recognized it as an upgrade to both packages, but I'm not sure it can do that sort of thing.

Even better would be a new switch for emerge that provides a help related to upgrades / installations. The help should consist of a text and links to upgrade guides and forum topics.

Exactly like it does at the end of a emerge for some packages would be great.
