Dmix not working with java applets

  • Quote

Post by puggy » Mon May 15, 2006 11:35 am

All my apps use dmix and I've even set up OSS dmix, but still the sound in java applets does not respect this, I can only assume that it is using alsa without thje dmix plugin which of course means it can't play sound at the same time as another application (I have no hardware mixing).

Any ideas for getting around this?

Cheers

maybe it helps using the aoss wrapper from alsa-oss package, like

Code: Select all

aoss firefox
works at least with flash, not sure about java applets.
AFAIK java itself should be able to use ALSA: http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bu ... id=4347309

So it definitely already uses alsa so I didn't really think wrapping it with aOSS would work. And what would I wrap? All of java?

yeah forget about aoss, that was just quick a shot in the dark.

Just tried it too with a noisy pjirc applet, and it's the same: doesn't get dmix'ed.
Other java apps like e.g. frinika have no problem with that, so assume it depends on how the app(let) initiates the sound device..

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that the application has the choice of whether to use dmix or not and I think by default, it must be on these days. However, if the applet were to initalise it's sound explicitly it's possible it might have been turned off. I might investigate an open source applet that does dmix then file a enhancement request with pokerroom.com. :-)

uhm, i guess there ya go:
http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bu ... id=6271108

my frinika test was pretty useless, as right before starting it the last song in audacious was over which i leveled down in order to hear something from the pjirc applet. /me knock head --> table.
now playing sth really simultanously.. java fails for reason mentioned in the bug, it wants hw:0 whereas it should use default.

Yet another bug Sun are completely ignoring although the rest of the ones I've submitted are for JWSDP. *sigh*
