test of PCM sound

I installed ALSA and the mixer runs ok, I installed and ran madplay and got an error when I tried to use it

audio: esd_open_sound() failed

I am not too bothered about playing an mp3 with madplay, but I did want to test the sound before continuing, so I am open to using another program.

Thanks, it worked. Strange though my machine has two plugs at the front but neither of these output anything, it is a good thing I tried the plugs on the back. When I tried a demo alsa program it now shows error (I typed)

I told ALSA about the via82xx, yes that is the type of card and I got the name off the ALSA guide, but whether it is the right setting I don't know.

I'm now getting a different error, a segmentation fault, isn't that is a general error ?
