I'm having the same problem with the in-kernel (2.6.17) amd64 version. Anybody got a solution?

That's just a press release for the same devicescape stack we've been working with for months now. It's not really ready for users to use yet (the user iterface isn't great), but it's being worked on. If you're not associating, try another firmware image, some people can't associate with the wl_apsta.o firmware.

Post your panic on the bcm43xx dev mailing list please.

iBook G4 1.2Ghz working, what now?

Post by McClie » Tue May 02, 2006 9:05 pm

I have compiled Linux 2.6.17-rc3 from the kernel.org site and got the extreme card working, thanks to all for developing this. I used wlassistant to get this actually connecting (I had also used it when I briefly had airport extreme working in Debian Etch).

Is there a similar thread/wiki that will tell me what to do next. E.g., what to put in a start-up script, is there a better option than wlassistant?

PS, Powerbooks seem to be having problems with sound, but 2.6.17-rc3 has given me sound, where 2.6.15 did not (but the problem with 15 was probably something that I was doing wrong).

Sound is definitely broken in 2.6.17-rc[1-2]. Of course, 2.6.17-rc1 won't even boot. It's not worth bothering with anything before 2.6.17-rc3.

I fully agree, I realised after posting this that the reason sound worked for me was that I had turned off Alsa in the kernel as Alsa even as a module was causing a kernel panic so bad it was not even rebooting in 100 seconds (as it promised to).

I am running sound off the basic kernel setting for pmac dma sound.

Your ALSA panic is most likely caused by building in ALSA drivers but not building in the i2c powermac / keywest drivers. Please see the PPC FAQ for more information.

WLAN timeout blues

Post by Grexe » Wed May 03, 2006 9:27 pm

sorry for the old news, thought they had not released everything but only a subset...
If you're not associating, try another firmware image, some people can't associate with the wl_apsta.o firmware
Strange, because wl_apsta.o was the only firmware among those I tried that gave me *no* errors and installed without a glitch, whereas the AppleAirport2 is giving me "outdated, don't use"-warnings and errors on certain interrupts.

Maybe I am using a wrong channel? (had 11, then 3).
I have a bit of a weird setup because I use a Linksys PCI-card in my server as part of a network-bridge to save the extra router. So I "route" incoming WLAN-requests to ethernet.
Never had any problems with MacOS X though, connects everytime.

Will try some other firmwares, thanks for the tip!

Are there different results when using ad-hoc or managed mode? Could that be a problem? (got both basically working, but still a timeout).
There are two states of gentoo boxes: compiling and turned off...

Ad-hoc is not supported, only Managed and Monitor.

bcm43xx is under Devices/Networking/Wireless LAN
softmac is under Networking as is WEP

TIPS
While you are in "menuconfig", if you're searching something in the kernel use "/" and enter your keyword.

Ok i've tested extensivly the driver in teh 2.6.17-r3 kernel.
With the wl_apsta driver firmware and the AppleAirPort2 frimware.

The problem i have with it is that apparently i get associated and authenticated but never get an IP address.
Unless when i use my home netwerk (without WEP). If i use it with WEP i cannot get associated. Weird...

anyone with the same problems?

I think you must first check the options in section Networking

Code: Select all

Networking -->
<M> Generic IEEE 802.11 Networking Stack
     <M> IEEE 802.11 WEP encryption (802.1x)
     <M> IEEE 802.11i CCMP support
     <M> IEEE 802.11i TKIP encryption
<M> Software MAC add-on to the IEEE 802.11 networking stack
Then you can see bcm43xx in section Device Drivers ---> Network device support ---> Wireless LAN drivers (non-hamradio) .

UPDATE: there's the folder and files in the kernel, but i can't see them with menuconfig.... :x

EDIT: sorry for my incompetence... it was a problem of dependency in the kernel...

Try:
make mrproper
cp old-2.6.xx-config .config
make oldconfig
make menuconfig (if you want, but you don't need it)

My card isn't getting recognized -- no address other than lo shows up in ifconfig. I've tried with the Apple driver and the wl_apsta.o driver.

Make sure you've compiled with debugging support, then give us the relevant bcm43xx output of dmesg and the lspci lines associated with the card. What kind of machine are you using?

There is no output of dmesg relating to the bcm43xx driver.

You have one of the new PCI-E cards that we haven't really spec'd yet. The basic fixes are in this patch that I made for a user with a similar card:
http://dev.gentoo.org/~josejx/PiranhaP.patch

Try that and see if it works for you. The fix for this probably won't make it into 2.6.17, but it should be in the 2.6.18_rc series when it starts.

Hi, I was using my iBook G4 12'' (latest model) with 2.6.16-gentoo-r1 and airport extreme did work.

Now I upgraded to 2.6.17-rc3 and I get this error:

Code: Select all

ifconfig eth1 up
SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such file or directory
Dmesg says:

Code: Select all

bcm43xx: Detected PHY: Version 3, Type 2, Revision 7
bcm43xx: Detected Radio: ID:8205017f (Manuf: 17f Ver:2050 Rev: 8)
bcm43xx: Radio Turned off
bcm43xx: Radio Turned off
bcm43xx: PHY connected
also

iwconfig eth1 (or) ifconfig eth1

seem to work, but I can't DHCP then.

What's wrong? Maybe I forgot some kernel options with the new kernel? I activated what said to in the howto.

Regards

PS I do have the firmware extracted. It is from "wl_apsta.o", maybe I should change firmware?

EDIT: I found also this appended to dmesg:

Code: Select all

bcm43xx: Error: Microcode "bcm43xx_microcode5.fw" not available or load failed.
so it is the firmware. Which one should I use?
