kde has no sound even if arts is running fine [SOLVED]

Good day everyone!

I have a problem with the sound in my gentoo distribution.

I emerged kde and alsa using the alsa-driver method.
Later I emerged arts and did an emerge --newuse world which went fine.

Now arts works very fine with every application (amarok, skype for example).
But kde has no sound!

I enabled the sound server in the control panel. If I click the test sound button, I get no error whatsoever, but still no sound.
I installed the kdemultimedia-arts and all the artwork packages, but still no sound at all from kde!

Can you please help me? I am sure I forgot to do something very stupid, but I cannot figure out what!
If you need any additional information, please ask me!

Thank you in advance to anyone who can help!

Valerio

Thanks! Since I used both the alsa and oss flag to enable oss emulation, every entry in the control panel works without error (even the oss entries). But still no sound. Is the control panel used to configure arts itself or should I see an arts entry in the control panel hardware pull-down menu (the one with autodetect, alsa, oss , threaded oss, etc.). Also do you all think this might be a library linking problem and would recompiling the whole kde help? Thanks for your help!

the control panel used to configure arts itself, it's strange that you didn't get any errors and still no sound. Maybe your volume was set to too low? I've spent a whole day trying to get alsa to work when I found out that it was using my onboard soundcard...
If you can select arts as an output in amarok and it works then arts works and it's a linking problem, a part of kde didn't get compiled with the arts flag. I just don't know which part.

i have had the same problem err little different on starting kde sounds wont come
it was kde-3.4.3 then after i play some sound it started giving sounds for the session.
on restart same problem.
i installed kde-3.5.1 and upgraded to kde-3.5.2 then the sounds are ok.
kde system player must be in trouble.
try using external player for kde sounds like alsa player.
hope this experience helps u
reach out a little bit more to catch it (DON'T BELIEVE the advocate part under my user name)

Thans to everyone for all the help. I configured amarok to use arts and it works perfectly. I even launched skype with an artsd wrapper and everything works very fine. So arts seems to be working wonderfully. The KDE version I am using is 3.5.2. I agree with you that this seems a linking problem. When I installed artsd I recompiled using the artsd flag in "make.conf". and the command emerge --update --deep --newuse world. However, I think there are some two possible explanations. 1) There is a package that is needed and was not in my originally emerged kde (and so it was not in world when I recompiled). I have no idea what that might be. 2) Something that shouldn't have been recompiled was not (maybe a mistake in some ebuild). Anyway, now I am on a short holiday but on tuesday when I get back to the machine I'll try to reemerge every single kde package and see what happens. I'll let you know. Thank you all for your help!

Hello everyone, it's me again. I got back to my machine and woul like to ask you if there is a kde utility that I can launch from the command line and that I uses arts through kde (like some notification tool, for example). Given that the problem might be linking error, my idea is to see if I can read about it from the stderr console output. This is to avoid recompiling the whole of kde! Thank you in advance!

Dear all, I seem to have found where the problem lies. When I go to the kde notifications panel in control center and start to browse under the play a sound entry, I notice that there are no kde sound files at all. Only the k3b sound effects are there. So, it seems that I am missing a package. Does anyone know which packages contains the sound files and has to be merged? Thank you. Also, once I do this, how can I add to the header of this thread the word "SOLVED"?

I found the sound files. They are in /usr/kde/3.5/share/sounds, while the system looks for them in /usr/share/sounds. Is there any alternative to changing manually all the file paths in the control center? Also, do you think that this is a bug and should be filed as such? Thank you again for all your help! We are getting close to the solution!

I've got in the kde contrl. c. in the play a sound box: KDE_Desktop_1.ogg and

Code: Select all

$ locate KDE_Desktop_1.ogg
/usr/kde/3.5/share/sounds/KDE_Desktop_1.ogg
in /usr/share/sounds I've got only sounds from k3b. But why do you need these sounds anyway? they are annoying and for the sounds you need you can click the browse icon and find them wherever they are.
If you want them in both places you can create a symlink from /usr/share/sounds to /usr/kde/3.5/share/sounds/

Hi all! I've made another discovery. Actually kde produces some sound when the sound files that I use are in wav format. The ones in ogg format do not work. So, the problem seems to be that the ogg vorbis plugin for arts is missing. Anyone knows which package should I install or how do I get ogg support for arts? I already added "ogg" to the use flags in make.conf but nothing happened. Thank you! We are getting closer and closer

$ emerge arts -p
>>> --pretend disables --ask... removing --ask from options.

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild R ] kde-base/arts-3.5.2 USE="alsa arts mp3 nas vorbis -artswrappersuid -debug -esd -jack -kdeenablefinal -xinerama" 0 kB

Total size of downloads: 0 kB

$ euse --info vorbis
global use flags (searching: vorbis)
************************************************************
[+ C ] vorbis - Adds support for the OggVorbis audio codec

Thank you for this last tip. This solved the problem. Actually I didn't exaclty need the KDE sound set. I just wanted to use the default sounds to see if everything was working correctly. So it seems it was a use flag problem. I have to say that I actualy had the ogg use flag in my make.conf:

Code: Select all

euse -i|grep ogg
ogg - Adds support for the Ogg container format (commonly used by Vorbis, Theora and flac)

But apparently, it was the wrong flag. Well, thanks to everyone who helped! Thank you really!
