fglrx driver doesn't detect monitor

My dad has a computer with a ATI Radeon X700 PCIe graphics card. He got a replacement card from the PC manufacturer because it had cooling issues, but now the fglrx driver doesn't detect the monitor (connected to the DVI port). I tried connecting a CRT monitor to the VGA output, and the image was displayed there fine. Using the vwsa X driver works fine. Any ideas? I tried creating a new xorg.conf, but no success.

have you tried changing the primary display to DVI out?

Yes. After experimenting a bit, I found that it sometimes finds the display, but most times not.

It seems that (if the vga works) maby eather you/the drivers are using VGA as the default "Monitor 1' and more than likley the DVI out for monitor 2

Yes, testing with a monitor with a VGA cable confirms this, but even when the driver is set to output in dual-screen mode, the DVI monitor is not activated. The silly monitor I'
m trying to use doesn't have a VGA connection, though. I bought an adapter to be able to connect the DVI cable to the VGA port, but the adapter does not seem to work.

What about posting your xorg.conf file to see if anybody can find maby some setup errors? Maby we can go line by line to get this working. If the monitor works then there could be a few problems:

1) xorg.conf set up wrong
2) possibly using the wrong motnitor options for the screen?
3) the DVI port is bad (unlikley)
4) Pluto is about to intercept neptunes orbit

do you h ave the ati drivers installed? It doenst look like that your xorg.conf files is configured to use the fglrx modules.

run this to set up your xorg.conf file for dual monitor support:

aticonfig --initial --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf

one that is done, and you get your ati drivers working properly, run:

aticonfig --initial=dual-head --dtop=horizontal --screen-layout=left --iagp=off -v

and that should get you ready for dual monitors. You might want to change that aroudn tho so insted of a "Seccond" monitor, it just mirros the first one (so that the DVI port mirrors the VGA port)
