Curious network speed problem [SOLVED]

Post by -leliel- » Fri Apr 21, 2006 8:14 am

Hi guys,

I have a silly problem with my gentoo server. If I want to send a file to my server speed is about 7 to 9 Mb/s what's normal for a switched 100mbit network. But if I want to download something speed decreases to about 500-900Kb/s all the time. I tried vsftpd/proftpd and secure transfer with scp, problem still exists. I thought it's might be evening traffic so I tried this morning, but nothing has changed. :(
I also tried to turn off any other services including iptables, snort..., no change. Downloading from different clients is possible but no client download got over 1Mb/s.

Network card is a Realtek 8139C+. Anybody got an answer?

Thanks in advance.

Have you checked the duplex settings with ethtool or mii-tool? ethtool eth0 or mii-tool should return you the mode NIC is operating at and if it's as 100 Mbit/s half-duplex, things will usually get slow. Changing to full duplex mode happens with ethtool -s eth0 speed 100 duplex full autoneg off or mii-tool -F 100baseTx-FD eth0.
Yes, I'm the man. Now it's your turn to decide if I meant "Yes, I'm the male." or "Yes, I am the Unix Manual Page.".

thanks for the advice.

The server runs normal since a few hours ... maybe there was too much network traffic. I don't know.
