I think the reason that was done is because his current livecd doesn't have a 2.6.16 kernel. linux-headers 2.6.16 wont emerge without a 2.6.16 kernel, and glibc 2.4-r2 needs linux-headers 2.6.16.

Is there anyone else having difficulty compiling kdesktop with the prudy patch?

I had to use the origional ebuild to get it to compile in the end

I built it fine the first time, but there is a very good possibility it is broken somewhere. I do not like the perrty patched ebuilds myself anymore, they didn't even work for me, did not get the perrty effects?

I thought this tip would be useful as your guide suggests using net-im/kopete instead of kde-base/kopete (useful as I have kde-meta installed and everytime it tries to pull the kde-base one):

The only problem is that you have to name the exact version or it won't work.

Very nice how-to. Works like a charm!

Now is there a reason why ~x86 is the default method? What would happen if I wanted to just run x86 after I followed the how-to? What I mean is what should be put in /etc/portage/package.keywords so things don't break when I switch to x86?

Emerge X.org 7

First, you should set the appropriate VIDEO_CARDS and INPUT_DEVICES flags in /etc/make.conf. To see what flags are available, run emerge -Dpv xorg-x11. On a typical machine with nvidia video, it might look like this:

INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse"
VIDEO_CARDS="nv nvidia vesa"

On an ATI System, the VIDEO_CARDS line should be like this (unless you're being anal about using proprietary drivers [fglrx])

VIDEO_CARDS="ati fglrx vesa"

this prevents unneeded packages from being emerged. if nothing is specified in the make.conf, all xorg packages will be build. as I said, for me it was about 55 packages. It will defenately cut down on the install time.

Hello Conrad users,

I have been following the guide on the install and everything seems to be going fine, until I get to step 11; the part where I need to "emerge conrad-fbsplash". I have tried many times to emerge conrad-fbsplash, and I have even started over from scratch 3 times [that is, mkfs all partitions - etc] and I keep getting the same error after "emerge conrad-fbsplash". I hope someone can help here... here is the output and also the emerge --info.... Many thanks in advance for tips/suggestions as I'd really like to complete the install .....

I'm not really sure what to do next ...........

Splashutils is known to fail with 2.6.16/17 kernels, and apparently, my overlay is not working for the 2.6.17 kernel.

Here is a quick, and dirty solution.
rm /usr/src/linux
emerge =sys-kernel/vanilla-sources-2.6.15
emerge conrad-fbsplash
rm /usr/src/linux
rm -r /usr/src/linux-2.6.15
emerge -C gentoo-sources
ln -s /usr/src/linux-2.6.17-rc1-no2 /usr/src/linux

hehe, calm down. I have it coming, need to do some final asjustments. (It doesn't want to detect my network for some reason, however, I may have this problem tracked.)

I want to make it perfect, so there a few if any bugs or problems, this is why it is taking so long.

The CD has every boot option as the gentoo 2006.0 CD, and it boots clean, and quick.

A few final touched I added, was to make alsa un-mute in an init script, which is already done. Then, I re-did the kernel with a different config. And now I am emerging sync, and planning on a -uD world before the final build.

It will be here by tonight, unfortunately, I am going to be home few parts of the day today, so I need to build it quickly right now, then I'll probally have to leave before I get to burn it and test it further. And not knowing when I'll be back, I'm going to try to say I'll upload it a little later tonight.

This is harder than I expected.
My ethernet is still not auto-detected, I'm going to say it is because of a bad kernel. I am going to try gentoo-sources, and see if that fixes it.

The CD is completely done, except my ethernet problems (my driver is 8139too, and it will not work, it loads the module fine, but nothing happens next)

I will work on this with all the time I get, and I will not work on it any longer than tomorrow. The CD is going to come out tomorrow morning, It is hard to make promises, but this one I can probally keep.

Thanks for all the hard work. I'm in the middle of another install because I didn't make my root partition big enough darn it (only 3 gig). I couldn't find any tools to resize reiser4 partitions. Anybody know how to do that? I tried resizefs.reiser4 from the latest SystemRescueCd but it didn't work. So anyhow I made root 15G this time.

All I gotta say is WOW!

This is by far the fastest and most RESPONSIVE system i have built to date. During the build I had a few quirks here and there which I overcame fairly easily. It was well worth it though.

I get an error at step:
"5.1 - Downloading and extracting a stage3 tarball"

Download is fine

Also checked md5sum. BUT extracting the tarball gives me an error message!!!

I think that error stems from creating and mounting /proc under /mnt/gentoo and tar not being able to extract that structure.

alternately, you could mount proc after untarring the archives. this will not error out.
