Post by barfo » Sat Apr 01, 2006 2:38 pm

so i've added fbpager and numlockx to ~/.fluxbox/startup and they are not starting. i've ampersanded both and the script is a+x.

Code: Select all

[ pwhitt@neptune 8:35AM ]~$ ls -o ./.fluxbox/startup
-rwxr-xr-x 1 pwhitt 25 Mar 30 21:42 ./.fluxbox/startup*
[ pwhitt@neptune 8:35AM ]~$ cat ./.fluxbox/startup
fbpager &
numlockx on &

[ pwhitt@neptune 8:35AM ]~$
can someone tell me what i need to do in order to get these to start when i startx? i've also tried adding both to .xinitrc... no dice.

How do you start X?
Do you use xdm, the startx command from a console? gdm, kdm?

I just did a search for 'fluxbox startup' on google. It found the fluxbox wiki. Looks like ~/.fluxbox/startup is only used if you use then 'startfluxbox' command.
If you don't use a graphical login, you could put 'startfluxbox' in your .xinitrc and use 'startx' to load X windows which will read .xinitrc and start fluxbox followed by your ~/.fluxbox/startup script.

If you use xdm to log in, use a file called ~/.xsession instead of .xinitrc

kfiaciarka: numlockx takes one argument, either on or off. on is the default is none is given, however since i couldn't tell whether or not it was working, i explicitly passed 'on'

dmartinsca: startx from the prompt. the contents of .xinitrc:

Code: Select all

# Fluxbox exec string
exec fluxbox
# start up with g-term
#gnome-terminal --geometry=110x18+245+772
i could probably get around the problem by editing the startfluxbox script, but i don't think i should have to do something that brutal, should i? isn't fluxbox xupposed to source ~/.fluxbox/startup upon starting?

fluxbox only runs the startup file if you start it using 'startfluxbox'. Just change the line 'exec fluxbox' to 'exec startfluxbox'. The startfluxbox script will run the contents of ~/.fluxbox/startup and then call 'exec fluxbox'

whoa. thanks for the info, but that totally broke my startx.

if i change 'exec fluxbox' to 'exec startfluxbox' startx will not run, giving me some bizarre error. if instead i replace it with simple 'startfluxbox' it gives me X, with no menus or anything, just the old fashioned X mouse cursor.

is there something hosed here, or is there something i've got configured incorrectly? i checked the starfluxbox script contents and they are exactly what is listed in the fluxbox wiki regarding the startup scripts...

tres strange, no?

my new .xinitrc:

Code: Select all

fluxbox & wmpid=$!

sleep 1
{ fbpager &
}

wait $wmpid

Sorry to post in a closed post but I have the same problem. I use XDM as login manager. My problem is a I have neither of the two files below:

If you use xdm to log in, use a file called ~/.xsession instead of .xinitrc

Any tips would be great. Oh, btw, i am a real beginner.
