Sys_Error: Couldn't load default.cfg

Thats the error i keep getting when i try to run quake as a normal user. I've added my user to the games group. Quake will also run as root with no problems. I've made a default.cfg file in the following places to try and solve the problem

/opt/quake3/default.cfg
/opt/quake3/baseq3/default.cfg
/home/ninja/.q3a/baseq3/default.cfg

But that didn't work any ideas??

Where did you copy the pk0.pk3 file to from the CD? You need to copy it to the /opt/quake3/baseq3/ directory.

You said that root has no trouble running the game, so maybe you did put it in the right spot, but if I remember right, that is the same error I get when I forget to copy that one file over from the CD.

I got it to work i found the default.cfg file in my home dir so all i did was move it to ~/.q3a/baseq3 and it worked! can't understand why it was in ~ in the first place?

default.cfg is zipped up in pak0, if it wont run without you having a default.cfg present outside of pak0 somethings wrong.

I had a similar problem, and it turned out that the pak0.pk3 file I copied off of my quake3 CD, had owner and group set to root, I changed the owner and group to games, and it fixed the problem.
