Hi,

it will boot fine.

You may have to download the driver package from the uli webpage to get network working (the driver was added to the kernel after the one on the livecd).
Sata and Sata2 may only work with latest kernels.

AGP&PCIE are working fine.
Sound works, but is not great.

I couldn't get the networking to work with the LiveCD, or any liveCD for that matter. I had to figure out what packages I needed to do a stage3, dl them, and move them to /usr/portage/distfiles to make it go. After the kernel compile, and first boot it has worked beautifully. I switched from an AGP 9800 to a PCIE X800GTO2, and had no issues with that. I didn't have to re-install drivers for any OS.

The SATA was detected fine with, and I'm using dmraid with the onboard raid controller. That is an horrible pain in the butt involving boot on another disk unless you want raid1.

I think SATAII still doesn't work.

I have this mobo too

I can tell you this about it

linux does not support the onboard network card, neither does it support the onboard audio card properly, it does not support the cpu and fan sensors ....

when you have this mobo and you want to run gentoo you have to sacrifice at least one pci slot to get network running

if you wand decent sound you need to sacrifice another pci slot

my conclusion

you have this mobo > forget about gentoo

ps: im not even mention the mass of masked packages with 64 bit

My conclusion: Buy supported hardware, or wait for drivers. Linux is made primarily in peoples' spare time, UNPAID. Nothing happens instantly. Hardware manufacturors rarely help with anything.

As for masked packages: I came across and needed none (except X.Org 7, which is masked for everyone, or was last I checked).

I have that kernel and I can assure you the NIC driver is not working for me with the acclaimed supported drivers.

this is a blatant lie.
from 2.6.14 (ir 13) onward, the onboard nic is supported by kernel driver.
For earlier kernels a driver is availble from the uli hp.
The onboard sound JUST WORKS.
It is not perfect, but it is good enough.
Oh, and it does support fan and cpu sensors just fine:

no you have not.
If you are too s* to build a kernel with the right driver, it is your own fault.
morfeus wrote: if you wand decent sound you need to sacrifice another pci slot
which is true for almost every onboard sound-
morfeus wrote: my conclusion

my conclusion: is you are not able to build a kernel with the correct drivers, don't use linux.

What does this have to do with the mobo?

So, stop talking about stuff you obviously do not understand.
Thank you.

Warning, link detection is broken. Your cable must be pluged in, before the driver is loaded...

Ahh, so it is. I'm still using 2.6.14-nitro2. I tried to apply the jmicron patch to that kernel, but I don't see any of the connected devices. Time to try a new kernel when I get home!!

I can't speak to SATAII or the onboard sound support (don't use them) but the NIC works just fine (using it now :) Regarding Morfeus's suggestion to forget about Gentoo on this board, forget the suggestion - it's working great.

Sound issue

  • Quote

Post by Nos_ » Sat Mar 25, 2006 1:46 pm

I'm having a problem with onboard sound on this board with 2.6.15 and 2.6.16 kernels. Just wondered if anyone else is experiencing the same didn't try it on lower kernels. I've tried intel8x0 and ali-M5451. I am pretty sure its the M5455 chip which should be covered by the intel8x0 driver. It seems to recognize the card and loads however sound is still broken

dmesg ALSA
AC'97 1 does not respond - RESET
AC'97 1 access is not valid [0xffffffff], removing mixer.
Unable to initialize codec #1
intel8x0_measure_ac97_clock: measured 54888 usecs
intel8x0: clocking to 48000

Am I doing anything wrong? I would really like to get it working so I can put my Audigy card back in my mythtv box. Thank you.

Hi,

forget the onboard sound. I got it working without problems, but it really, really sucks. The sound is of the lowest quality with a lot of noises.

Just use the Audigy, it is much, much better.

agree

Prefer sound card to onboard sound (and vid card to onboard vid :)

get one decent card and it goes on and on and on :)

Still using Hercules Game Theater sound card, but in the other computers, using old sb cards, still works good :)

Oh by the way

Now running with 3 19"monitors :)
(think 4 would be sick :))

nvida 6800gt (agp default) & 7800 gs (pcix)
setup as (7800) (6800 6800)

works GREAT in windows and linux (dual boot)

Sound Problem

I figured as much unfortunately no money in budget to buy another sound card right now. And I really enjoyed having digital sound out of my myth box. Oh well.

Try the commercial OSS drivers from www.opensound.com for the onboard sound.
I've only had the board for a day so I can't confirm if this is a 100% fix but I haven't noticed any noticable sound quality issues.
