Convert an audio tune from stereo to mono

Help with creation, editing, or playback of sounds, images, or video. Amarok, audacious, mplayer, grip, cdparanoia and anything else that makes a sound or plays a video.

Convert an audio tune from stereo to mono

Can anyone recommend an application that are able to convert an audio tune recorded in stereo to mono?

It doesn't need to mix the channels as it's the same sound on both of the channels.

mencoder and/or mplayer are both usually good starting points for "simple" mangling like that - although I can't remember the commands offhand to pull that particular request off - the man pages are quite comprehensive - if a bit lengthy.
Y'know, somewhere along the line, my brain got wired directly to my fingers .. I'm not even consulted anymore in the decision making processes.

Try Audadcity. You can just drop the second track in audacity and send it back out to a wav, ogg or mp3. I think you can do the same in Sweep...

I have tried Audacity but I really can't understand how to accomplish this task with Audacity.

How do I remove just one of the channels with Audacity?

If you open an audio file with audacity, you should see (the beginning of) the filename on th left side of the waveform. If you click on the name, you get a drop-down menu which contains "split stereo track". If you do this and click on the little cross in the top left corner of the second track (close it), then you have a mono track. You can then export it to wav, mp3 or ogg via File-Export as ...".

emerge sox

Code: Select all

sox stereo_file.wav -t wav -s -w -c 1 mono_file.wav
Sox is a handy audio processing tool. Difficult syntax but it can do many interesting things to your audio. ;)
