The key is supporting linux and this thread has missed that point. Another MMORPG that I have seen that supports linux is Daimonin. It is decent and improving. Growth is not as fast as some of the others.

I had the same problem with daimonin. I installed the beta3 package (masked) and it works fine.

Vendetta Online

  • Quote

Post by momerath » Wed Mar 22, 2006 11:24 am

Greetings!

I'm one of the developers of Vendetta (http://vendetta-online.com/) which is an MMO hybrid (space-FPS/RPG now, with RTS and deeper adventure elements to come). We're long time Gentoo users- server and desktop. Our game runs natively on Linux/x86 and x86_64(amd64) as well as Windows and MacOSX (ppc and intel). It runs on a *really* wide range of hardware. Officially the minimum spec is a geforce1, but we have users playing with rage128s and TNTs. On the other end of the spectrum we have enough shaders and high-res textures to give your 7800 a workout.

We're also a very small company (4 people), with a very different business model. We don't have investors or publishers, so there is no one breathing down our neck about their return on investment. The game became pay-to-play ($10/mo) in November of 2004, but development hasn't slowed down at all. 2 days ago we released a major rewrite of our client, which paves the way for future interface-dependent features like player-owned capitol-ships and stations. You can try the game with no obligation (or credit-card) for 8 hours, and we have various payment options including pay-by-cash.

Puzzle Pirates is good fun, very popular and supports win/mac/linux
There are several payment options (even a free option now) and several oceans (servers) to join.

weird that I've never heard of vendetta, and I've looked pretty hard for space mmorpgs in the past. I like that combat is described as twitch based, since the braindead fights in eve and mmorpg characteristic "skill is determined soley by how long you've played" are what turned me off to it. I think I'll try it out this week.

momerath, would I need a joystick to be competitive in combat? Also, I noticed most of the manual and FAQs are future tense. Is this a complete game?

I'm trying VO on my Wondows box. My linux one has no internets. D:

EDIT: Well, it failed. I was told to reboot my PC and... my brother stole it after it rebooted. Now he's playing the crappiest MMO I've ever laid eyes on: FlyFF. That game blows.
