Experiences with KDE 3.5.1?

  • Quote

Post by mointrigue » Tue Mar 14, 2006 5:03 pm

I'm considering emerging KDE 3.5.1, but I'm wary as I had a few negative experiences using it on other distributions (application crashes, automounting issues). Admittedly, that may have as much to do with the way those distros packaged it as anything. I was impressed with 3.5.1 regardless, and so here I am.

So I am wondering, what are people's experiences with it on Gentoo? I can't get a good bead on it from the current posts. Is it working well for you? Or should I just wait for it to get out of testing and into the stable branch?

I've been using KDE 3.5.0 and 3.5.1 since they appeared in portage and I haven't had any major issues with these two versions.

I don't know if it matters but I'm using Xorg 6.8.99-r15.

If you ask me go ahead and give 3.5.1 a try

Hmm, for me everything works fine except two things:

1) kicker crashes with a chance of 90% when logging out of KDE

2) Kopete is extremely unstable for me! It worked much better with KDE 3.4.

The automount features work very well and are very useful for me :)

I've been using kde 3.5.1 on my laptop(x86) and on my desktop(amd64) and haven't had any issues that weren't my own fault. I'd say give it a try and if you don't like it you can just uninstall it.

Thanks for all your advice. I'm glad to hear that it seems to be more stable on Gentoo than other distros. I think I'll just ssh into my home computer and get it started now. :D

I have no problems with Kopete but the "logoff crash" is a pain in the ass...

No, for me kicker just crashs with the typical kde-crash window when I try to logoff. I have to close this window, otherwise the reboot/logoff process won't finish. I use a nvidia card btw :) If anyone knows a solution to fix this, please let me know!

I haven't had the kicker crash at logout problem on Gentoo, but on another distro I solved the issue by removing kickerrc and rebuilding the panel elements.

Thanks for your encouragement guys! I'm new to Gentoo, and my rule of thumb for every other distro that upgrading kde is a nightmare. Gentoo upgraded flawlessly!!!

Thanks!

Unmask and try using net-im/kopete instead of kde-base/kopete. It works great for me even with VoIP/Google Talk :)

Yeah, I tried this too but didn't help at all :(
I have now emerged this qt-ebuild and until now there were no more crashs. I hope this solved it...
