fresh install, can't login as root

We just finished installing 1.4rc2 from stage 1. We set the root password before rebooting. However, due to some problems, we were unable to unmount the partitions and we had to do a cold reboot. We booted off the hard drive and everything went okay until we got to the log in prompt. We tried root with the password we set and it didn't work. It says "Login incorrect". We tried root with a blank password and it didn't work. We tried booting off the CD and using "passwd root" to change the root password. This didn't work either once we restarted into Gentoo. Does anyone know how to reset the root password, possible off the install CD? Thanks in advance,

After booting the CD, did you "chroot" to the root partition before you tried "passwd root"?

Yeah, I used "chroot / /bin/bash".

normaly you would do:

chroot /mountpoint_of_your_root_partition_where_you_want_to_install_gentoo /bin/bash

aka:

mount /dev/hda3 /mnt/gentoo
chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash

You then changed the temporary password on the installation system (that is advised since then you are able to open other consoles when installing).

To change the password in the installed system chroot into it and then do 'passwd'.
