[solved] newbie mplayer questions

Post by lroy1978 » Fri Mar 10, 2006 5:02 pm

Hi All,
I am trying to use mplayer to watch DVDs and also to view streaming realmedia over the net. There does not seem to be any DVD option in the mplayer menu. I have tried giving mplayer an address to stream data from but when I do this the whole of kicker goes crazy and starts flashing the application icons on and off!!

I am using an AMD64, are there any issues with this and w32codecs?

Here is a copy of my make.conf file

# These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically built$
# Please consult /etc/make.conf.example for a more detailed example
CFLAGS="-march=k8 -pipe -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer"
CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
MAKEOPTS="-j2"
GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://ftp.club-internet.fr/pub/mirrors/gentoo"
LINGUAS="en"
USE="kde qt real win32codecs dba ssl apache nvidia alsa amd64 alsa oss hal dbus"

Cheers,
Lee

For DVD playback, you might need to compile mplayer with the "dvd" useflag.
Have a look at the output of "emerge -pv mplayer" to see what other features might be disabled by USE flag settings.
Hope that helps.

You seem to be using gmplayer which is quite crappy. I recommend just using the command-line mplayer or some other mplayer-frontend (I haven't found any good frontends yet though - except perhaps kplayer but it's not that good either).

I think using the win32codecs with a 64bit mplayer is not possible.
Try media-video/mplayer-bin
