[solved] ethernet card intermittedly works on HP Omnibook

  • Quote

Post by scubacuda » Wed Mar 01, 2006 1:44 am

solution Turns out that my eth0 card was wireless, not the NIC. Geez, that was stupid...

I found this out as soon as I emerged the wireless-tools and ran iwconfig.

Something like the following fixed my problem

Code: Select all

ifconfig eth0 down
cd /etc/init.d
/etc/init.d/net.eth0 stop
mv net.eth0 net.eth1
rc-update del net.eth0
ifconfig eth1 up
dhcpcd eth1
*****************************

I just reinstalled Gentoo on my laptop using (one of) the latest bootdisks (using Genkernel, not doing the kernel manually), and for whatever reason, I keep losing my network connection every half hour or so. In order to turn it "on", I have to either reboot or run

Code: Select all

/etc/init.d/net.eth0 restart
.

When I lose a connection, I can't even ping my gateway. Oddly, if I do a ping (gateway), I can leave it on for hours and never lose my connection.

Any ideas on where I might start?

FYI, here is my dmesg output

Code: Select all

For what it's worth, here is a previous post I had on the problem. At first, I thought it was a DNS error.

Actually, I used Knoppix all the time before I reinstalled Gentoo, and I never had a problem. Here is my dmesg and lsmod, respectively, once I boot up into Knoppix.
