'Reboot' 'shutdown -h now' hang from session

In a fluxbox or gnome session in my user account, if I open a terminal and try to reboot or shutdown, my computer hangs, forcing my to reset. However if I first logout and then choose shutdown from gdm, or If I choose the shutdown/restart options from gnome's menu, then it works fine.

How could I find out what is going wrong?

go to the console (kill -9 the gdm process and Ctrl-Alt-Backspace or Ctrl-Alt-F1) and enter shutdown -h now and look out for errors in the shudown process.

I'm experiencing exactly the same problem.

I see that a couple of gnome warnings try to come up but are never completely shown.

Any news?
