My hard drive is dead?

Kernel not recognizing your hardware? Problems with power management or PCMCIA? What hardware is compatible with Gentoo? See here. (Only for kernels supported by Gentoo.)

My hard drive is dead?

I was playing a game (Civ IV) then after a while my machine was not responding. I did a hardware reset and here I got after reboot:

Uncompressing linux...Ok, booting kernel.
Loading please wait...
mount: Mounting /dev/hda1 on /root failed: Invalid argument
mount: Mounting /root/dev on /dev/.static/dev failed: No such file or directory
mount: Mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: No such file or directory
Target filesystem doesnt have /sbin/init

I have another distro with my second hdd and I tried to mount it but didnt work:

[root@myhost eric]# mount /dev/hdb1 /mnt/hd
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdb1,
missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so

Is there a way to fix it? All my stuff is inside this hard drive...and I don't have backup :(
Thanks

Could you provide some more information? What filesystem is your root partition?

Does bios find the disk normally? Check the cables.
does the drive sound normal? Maybe it doesn't even spin at all?

You could try knoppix or some other LiveCD to detect the disk.

If it looks and sounds normal, you could try some tools for repairing lost partitions/disks.
But many of these tools can break the filesystem and partition even more. So only do this as a last try.
most of these tools cost money. I don't know any names of free open source versions.

Try running badblocks from gentoo livecd, that way you can see if the drive is physically broken.
