Here nothing network related works in kde-apps when in Xgl, really weird behavior.

With the risk of this having been asked before (didn't read the whole thread):

The wobbly plugin is quite slow for me, so it seems. Moving works great, it's fast as long as it doesn't "wobble out". When I let go of the window, it needs sometimes more than two seconds per frame, needing close to ten seconds to stop wobbling completely. Anybody else experienced that?

Me.
It seems also that moving the mouse over the window (or better, selecting text if it is possible) accelerates a bit the "wobble out"
Everything else is quite fast, i've a Athlon 3200+ (using 32bit) , nvidia 6600 AGP and 1GB ram

change the DPI setting with --dpi.
for the keyboard, the wiki takes up the problem with the layouts.

Im running this as my normal user, what troubles are you having. At a guess you need this in your xorg.conf file:

Code: Select all

Section DRI
    Mode 0666
End Section
I don't have this and I still have no problems running it as a normal user. I only got problems with an earlier version when I started an X server as root first, some file or whatever would be left on /tmp that prevented xgl from starting afterwards (maybe works now, haven't checked since).
What does xgl say when you (Indemnis) start it as non-root? Maybe you have some other permissions problem... Can you start normal X as non-root?
I just needed a restart and I was all good to go. It works as non-root. The only issue I'm having now is that games (like Battle of Wesnoth) are reacting strangely to it - if I have any color besides black in the window behind the game ( and that includes icons on the desktop ), they bleed through to the game.

I've actually seen this behavior too. Things like Quake3 work fine, but a game I am developing bleeds through and seems transparent while working fine in regular X.

I don't play many games but I also saw this behaviour with OpenTTD when I was playing with XGL. I see that Battle of Wesnoth uses the SDL libraries too so there may be some common problem with the way XGL works with SDL. I don't suppose the game you are developing (steve_d555) uses SDL too?

However, i'm pretty sure the Quake 3 engine uses OpenGL, so that might explain why you don't get any bleeding there.

Post by gregday » Sun Feb 19, 2006 11:43 pm

Not using Gentoo here (Slackware, dont flame me!), but this forum and the wiki have been an invaluable resource for me.

I've compiled Xgl from the xgl-0-0-1 branch and I'm using Mesa CVS. I can get Xgl to run, but I'm getting that darned "compiz: Support for non power of two textures missing" error when running Compiz. I've got Xgl using the NVIDIA proprietary drivers, 1.0.8178, and Compiz running with LD_LIBRARY_PATH pointed toward Mesa's libGL.

My card is a GF4 FX5700.

Has anyone found any other tips for this problem?

Just posting a big thanks to everyone who provided solutions in this thread and on the boards. I had a few problems with my install, but the solutions posted here worked wonders :)

Got my laptop migrated over to Xgl, now it's time to do my desktop :)
'Cause I can.

I'm very sure quake3 is using openGL, because the alternative is DirectX and its from microsoft, 'nuf said ;)

Wooo... it works.

Just to report it working on amd64. Very impressed - even if experimental code.

Only problem, I lost hardware acceleration for games or even glxgears if I run it... odd. Feel very smooth so I think it's working ok. I can spin the cube with video running, no problem. But when i I launch nvidia-settings, or glxgears or glxinfo... they all behaved as if there was no hardware acceleration... actually nvidia-settings show nothing, glxinfo report no hardware acceleration and glxgears very slow 900fps but window is black. I start compiz with :

Code: Select all

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/opengl/xorg-x11/lib/ compiz ...
if I used nvidia library it failed on

Code: Select all

compiz: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is missing
which I think is an extension missing from nvidia driver for the moment.

Keep the good work - that is an amazing evolution.

xgl and xfce problems

Post by BosHaus » Mon Feb 20, 2006 8:34 am

I've got XGL up and running on xfce, but I had a couple of issues.

First: my graphical pager has shrunk.. it still has all 4 screens but in the size of one. To see what I mean look at http://alexbos.net:8080/pager-small.jpg . I can't figure out how to get it to look right again.

Second: When I log out of xfce, it always locks up and I have to ctrl-alt-backspace. The processes still going are:

Code: Select all

boshaus  14089  1.5  7.4  78196 38048 tty1     SL   02:00   0:28 Xgl :1 -ac -accel xv:fbo -accel glx:pbuffer

boshaus 14102 0.0 0.7 58660 4056 tty1 S 02:00 0:00 compiz --replace switcher decoration wobbly fade minimize cube rotate zoom scale move resize place opa
boshaus  14103  0.0  1.6  64448  8276 tty1     S    02:00   0:00 gnome-window-decorator
If you know howo to fix either of these I'd really appreciate it!

there seems to be something wrong with the patched cairo. When I try to run vmware, I get:

Code: Select all

/opt/vmware/workstation/lib/bin/vmware: /opt/vmware/workstation/lib/lib/libgcc_s.so.1/libgcc_s.so.1: version `GCC_3.4' not found (required by /usr/lib/libcairo.so.2)
/opt/vmware/workstation/lib/bin/vmware: /opt/vmware/workstation/lib/lib/libgcc_s.so.1/libgcc_s.so.1: version `GCC_3.4' not found (required by /usr/lib/libcairo.so.2)
/opt/vmware/workstation/lib/bin/vmware: /opt/vmware/workstation/lib/lib/libgcc_s.so.1/libgcc_s.so.1: version `GCC_3.4' not found (required by /usr/lib/libcairo.so.2)
But, when I run it using the cairo ver in portage, it works fine

Same problem here, but i use gnome.
And another problem, some programs opens without decorations, for example vlc, or all wine aplications.

UPD: I updated gnome and compiz, now i have vlc with decorations and normal workspace switcher.

Compiling x11-base/xgl-20060216

Post by x.para » Mon Feb 20, 2006 12:59 pm

Hi, I am trying to compile whole Xgl again using svn ver. 14

during x11-base/xgl-20060216 I have problem with applying the patch xgl-slang-library-noise.diff

Code: Select all

 * Applying r200-copy-pixels-1.patch ...                                         [ ok ]
 * Applying xgl-slang-library-noise.diff ...

 * Failed Patch: xgl-slang-library-noise.diff !
 *  ( /usr/local/portage/xgl/x11-base/xgl/files/xgl-slang-library-noise.diff )
 *
 * Include in your bugreport the contents of:
 *
 *   /var/tmp/portage/xgl-20060216/temp/xgl-slang-library-noise.diff-12179.out

!!! ERROR: x11-base/xgl-20060216 failed.
!!! Function epatch, Line 350, Exitcode 0
!!! Failed Patch: xgl-slang-library-noise.diff!

Would someone know what could be the problem?

Thanks

UPDATE: Again to remove i830 record from

Code: Select all

/usr/portage/distfiles/cvs-src/Mesa/src/mesa/drivers/dri/i915/intel_ioctl.c
helped.

hi

when emerge xgl there's a little problem..
All files aren't in the svn i think !

Code: Select all

!!! Files listed in the manifest do not exist!
files/xgl-slang-library-noise.diff
Am I alone ?

EDIT : I think the 'digest' is not updated (so just with ebuild x11-base/xgl/xgl-20060216.ebuild digest and it seems to work)

Removing the epatch line for that patch doesn't break the build. Will post results of running made binaries later.

Alas, it does break it. Rebuilding with digest fix mentioned above. Will take a while due to upgrading of glibc to 2.3.6-r3.

I'm not sure if other terminals already support it (at least I can't find the option in gnome terminal) but the newest versions of rxvt-unicode support alpha channel which means that it is possible to get real transparent background (or even foreground) colors. I don't know if the 7.1 version (newest in portage) supports it, but it is sufficient to just bump the portage ebuild to 7.6 to get the newest version. :)

Code: Select all

# urxvt -depth 32 -bg rgba:0000/0000/0000/9999

What's the currect status of GeForce4 MX cards? I have one of these and no matter what I do, I am getting a "no visual format found" error.

Is this because of my card?
