I had two systems running with coreutils 5.94, using the same useflags ("acl nls"), the same portage settings (as reported with "emerge --info"), the same locale, just differing in CPU related flags (AMD vs. Intel) and non-NPTL vs. NPTL (which shouldn't make any difference in this context).

Both machines have been synched today. The AMD machine behaved fine, the Intel machine broke.

Downgrading the broken machine's coreutils to 5.93 (with a binary package build on my working box) solved the problem there. The question remains: why? ;-)

Was having the same problem. All started after coreutils-5.94 emerge on an emerge -e system. followed the directions from another post and copied /bin/expr from another box to the afflicted one, masked coreutils-5.94, re-emerged coreutils-5.93 and all seems to be well again. For what it's worth, here's an ls -l of the binaries:

Code: Select all

gentoo-1 bin # ls -l exp*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 81164 2006-02-19 09:16 expr
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 24372 2006-02-19 00:20 expr.broke
expr.broke was the binary from coreutils-5.94.

here's an emerge --info[/code]

Code: Select all

I have this prob also. I did "emerge -uDpv world" and it went fine. I did then "emerge -e system" because of updated glibc and then I woke up emerge was failed soon after coreutils (some ebuilds after coreutils didn't need expr it seems).

this is really wierd tho. I have 2 AMD64 box here. One upgraded fine and the other does not. You guys think it might be one of the USE flag that causes it?

fix didn't work for me - can someone send me the entire compiled coreutils for 5.93 (for i586)?

i copied expr from 5.93 and masked 5.94 and tried compiling 5.93, but i get an automake error now.

Do not forget to setthe right permissions for expr. After doing that it is working for me.
On my machine it must be placed as /bin/expr and not as /usr/bin/expr (is an symlink to /bin/expr)

had the same prob today on an i686 with coreutils-5.94 after an 'emerge -e system'. using razors expr and masking coreutils-5.94 works now.

The above expr binary (From RaZoR1394) worked great. Download that and replace the existing one in /bin Then mask coreutils-5.94 and rebuild coreutils-5.93. That solved my problem in one go, so I suggest everyone here with similar problems try that as a first fix. Thanks to everyone that figured this out.

Unhappiness...

Well, none of this solved my problems.

I've rebuilt older versions of glibc and coreutils on another machine and moved over binaries, but my machine is totally borked. emerge segfaults, and now it won't boot because Initscript wouldn't even run....and I get non-Ascii chars (or at least a strange character set) on my console window.....And no way to login now. Emerge started segfaulting just as soon as glibc-2.6.3-r3 finished emerging (with gcc-4.0.2), and my system is totally unusable now.

I just want to thank the glibc maintainer for putting out another fine patch that has now made my week (harder).

Yes, I'm pissed off.

I pulled an older version of expr from another machine that I use as a router and then emerged coreutils-5.93 and all is well for me again too. I am very thankful to everyone here that worked together to find a solution for this problem. These forums and the support within the Gentoo community are one of the reasons that I like this distrubution so very much.

This did great! I did copy the file over it,, but I also realize that it was a symlink.. so I needed to overwrite the initial version at /bin.

Thanks for the quick fix on this guys.. I had worried that I borked my laptop something fierce last night. =) Another reason why I enjoy this distrubtion!
