Unhappy with gentoo

Post by morfeus » Sat Feb 18, 2006 12:08 pm

Since I installed gentoo on my computer the following devices are not supported and are not working:

my onboard network card
my deskjet printer
my onboard sound card
my keyboard layout
my games

I have put weeks into troubleshooting issues with unsupported hardware and Im now more than fed up with it. Gentoo linux has totally turned my machine into a slow dysfunctional machine. The reason I initially choose gentoo/linux is because it has an 64 bit architecture. I can tell you now this 64 bit architecture has caused more problems for my machine then advantages.

Im definitely going back to windows 32 bit os. Its faster, supports anythin, has nice 3d acceleration, ...

I am VERY disappointed in this OS. Its a hype and on 95 percent of the machines gentoo is a bad solution.

What's your network card? What's your sound card? What's your keyboard layout? Try asking for help, don't expect to get everything (or in many cases, anything) right first time.

64-bit works flawlessly on my brand new machine (as does my network card, my sound card, my keyboard, and everything else).

On 98% of machines, Windows is a bad solution.

It doesn't work for you, therefore it doesn't work for 95% of people? Does not compute.

You could have asked for help in these forums. There are a lot of knowledgable people here who could probably have helped you get most of it working.

suggestions

Post by morfeus » Sat Feb 18, 2006 12:23 pm

include a warning

gentoo is not the best choice when you are dutch=speaking or using onboard devices

also a board for unsupported hardware would be very much needed

stop the lies about the 64 bit arch

its not quite useable yet

gentoo is loosing users claiming otherwise

Gentoo works fine for me with onboard devices. I'm not Dutch, but I know there are LOTS of Dutch users using it quite happily.

There are no lies about x86-64. It's not fully usable if you want such things as flash support. It's just fine if you don't.

Go spread your FUD elsewhere, k?

So you knew it wasn't going to work, installed it anyway, and then complained about it to people who package the kernel rather than creating it? Why?

My mobo is integrated. It works 100%!

Ok, so your network card isn't supported. Here's a guess as to why: Newish hardware, not many linux users or developers have it, manufacturor fails to provide useful information, unpaid developers thus must reverse-engineer it into working. That. Takes. Time.

IMO Gentoo is well documented and questions are seldom left unanswered on this forum. I am quite sure most of your problems have been solved by someone using gentoo already. Some guys got gentoo to work on macintel already.

Another clueless newbie who is unable to handle gentoo because he was unable to chose the right distribution accordant to his linux-experience.

95 percent of gentoo-users dont care.

Please dont help those people because they are stupid *and* rude, they dont deserve any help.

Please stay friendly.

@morfeus: Your description sounds more like you're unable to configure your box than anything else.
Please make sure that you have searched for an answer to a question after reading all the relevant docs.

From some of his other threads, I conclude he's using 'ricer' flags. He somehow broke slocate. I haven't been able to do that yet.. (and there's not much I haven't broken)

As your other thread: Locked - Please do not create multiple threads all over the forums. I'll leave 64 bit architecture is a nightmare open as despite the title it may actually be constructive.
