I assume it's about the cards that don't show up as OpenGL 2.0 in glxinfo...

Also, i thought if it were worth to make a glue library which simply dlopen()'s and dlsym()'s all symbols exported by nvidia's
library PLUS the needed function from mesa and using it instead... Maybe that would resolve the missing extension problem...

Posting a success story from my GeForce 6800Go-powered laptop. I ended up having to edit the gconf for compiz manually, but otherwise the following startup script [by my friend, who tried this a day before me. :)] works perfectly. The only downside is the missing textures in 3D games, but other things (like Mplayer's gl VOs or glxgears) work perfectly.

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh

 Xgl :1 -accel xv -accel glx:pbuffer &
 sleep 3
 export DISPLAY=:1
 export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/opengl/nvidia/lib/
 gnome-session &
 sleep 7
 DISPLAY=:1 LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/opengl/xorg-x11/lib/ compiz --replace gconf &
 sleep 7
 DISPLAY=:1 gnome-window-decorator &
 DISPLAY=:1 xbindkeys

gnome-window-decorator, Failed to load shadow images

Post by Sm1 » Thu Feb 16, 2006 7:51 am

Followed directions on the wiki,

However when launching on :1 (or any screen for that matter)

Code: Select all

supermario@supermario /usr/local/xgl $ DISPLAY=:1 gnome-window-decorator
gnome-window-decorator, Failed to load shadow images
I saw this posted in 2 locked threads, with no solutions posted.
I also heard on #xgl that making this be the only running xserver should resolve, but to no avail for me.

From a quick glance at the source, its a gdk call that kills it. I rebuilt gdk just in case, but still no help.

Any other idears?

I have a GeForce2 GTS, I used hanno's latest overlay (I edited the mesa ebuild not to apply the xgl-arbshader-symlink-2.diff patch because it's already included in mesa's CVS)

Now my geforce2MX200 works with Xgl
And it is as fast as my geforce6600 gt!!!

(Image-quality without DVI is really bad imho )

regards Dennis

EDIT: No problems with fonts here but Xvideo is damn slow.

looks like setting the font size to 10 is like 12 in normal xorg, very wierd...
btw I am using KDE with glxcompmgr untill zack rusin finishes the kde decorator for compiz
Xgl is a little bit slower then normal X and some thing like the KDE control center take ages to draw but I am just happy it's working.
XV is dead slow, opengl output works fine but with artifacts.

gnome-font-properties then go to details... it shows you the dpi of your gnome desktop, in kde i don't know, but there is an option in a config file (i don't remember)

GeForce4 440 works here, finally! I certainly hope everyone else can get their nvidia cards working now too.

I'm having the strangest problem with Xgl. Whenever I run the Xgl command in any shape or form, I get nothing. I just ran the command:

Code: Select all

Xgl :1 -ac -accel glx:pbuffer -accel xv

all it does is just sit there with a blinking cursor. Nothing happens. I can't see any errors anywhere. Does anyone know something, anything I can try?

I have a GeForce4 Ti 4200 AGP 8x

How are you starting Xgl? After Xgl, you should start compiz and gnome-window-decorator (or wm and glxcompmgr).

I'm starting xgl using the command I mentioned above. When I run that command, I don't get an X server on ctrl+alt+f7 or f8 (or any other vt's for that matter). Therefore, I cannot start compiz, gnome-window-decorator, or anything like that without first having the X server running, am I wrong?

You have to run Xgl on top of an X server. For instance, to run it from command line, put something like this in your .xinitrc:

Code: Select all

Xgl :1 -ac -accel glx:pbuffer -accel xv &
DISPLAY=:1 LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/opengl/xorg-x11/lib/ compiz --replace decoration wobbly fade switcher minimize cube rotate zoom scale move resize place &
sleep 5
DISPLAY=:1 gnome-window-decorator &
DISPLAY=:1 gnome-session
Then start X with 'startx'

I didnt see it mentioned but In here so if it is sry for the question. But what effect does this have on games and such? do any of the extra crap prevent you from gaming? I ask b/c I saw in here that nvidia drivers needed some extra driver installed too i didnt know if that would jack with it or not.
