No more emerge system?

Having problems with the Gentoo Handbook? If you're still working your way through it, or just need some info before you start your install, this is the place. All other questions go elsewhere.

No more emerge system?

  • Quote

Post by kaega2 » Mon Feb 13, 2006 8:39 am

I've used Gentoo for a couple of years now, and I've noticed something in the handbook that I found rather odd recently. The step "emerge system" doesn't seem to be in the handbook. It skips right to "Configuring your kernel" (there are a few things inbetween yes)
This is a long step and seemed to be fairly important. Can anyone explain to me why exactly you would have needed to "emerge system", and why you do not need it now?

I don't know about before, but the stage 3 installation tarball is the default method of installing gentoo, which means that you download a tarball with precompiled basic programs in it (gcc, bash shell, tar.....) which you unpack on your hard drive and it is a base for installing new programs later.

And i guess that before that, stage 1 was the default installation method which means that you had to precompile your whole base system, hence the "emerge system"

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong anywhere, I'm a relatively fresh user to gentoo so I don't really know how it used to be before :)

emerge system was for stage 1 and 2 installs, now that stage 3 is the only supported method emerge system is not needed in the docs. However, if you were to still do a stage 1 install you would most certainly need to do an emerge system.

Yeah, I'm doing a stage 2 Install. Now that you meantion it, the handguide didn't ask me what stage I'm using either. I definitely agree with the last post, there should be an updated handbook for stage 1 and 2 installs. I've had a lot of issues installing Gentoo in the past. It's been usually do to something being updated and I just assumed the process would have been the same. If you guys are reading this (gentoo handbook writers and such) there are a lot of users that aren't experts or newbies, that just need a push in the right direction to use the advance installations.

That's the thing; the only officially supported install now is stage 3. If you want to do a stage 1 or 2 install you would have to do it from memory (which many people can still do). Stage 1 and 2 are technically still available, but you are on your own as far as the docs are concerned. However, the forums will always be here as a resource to help answer your questions.

That looks good to me. The only reason I would even make a deal out of it is in case something was updated or changed. I can remember the way I'm doing it now, but several things have changed in the handbook since I've started using Gentoo. I've always relied on the handbook from this website to keep me up to date with it. Since I can still find the information on the site, even though it's not in the handbook, I'm fine with that.

Thanks for the info :D
