I'm having that problem too. I think it's something with the ebuild maybe?. If you go to /var/tmp/portage/amarok-1.4_beta1/amarok-1.4-beta1 and type make it compiles fine

just unpack the tar.bz2,
./configure
make
make install

and inject the ebuild. it worked for me.

Setting MAKEOPTS="j1" fixed my problem, and it appears it's been fixed in Portage, so I'll just set it back!

However, I am disappointed with this release. iPod support certainly is better, but no video transfer at all yet.
