thx for you help, i allready had nvidia-glx, but the reemerge failed because of the nvidia fb support in the kernel. But my X Server still doesn't work.

When I try to test it with

Code: Select all

X -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf
i get no error message, but my monitor shows me, that the frequency is to high.

Code: Select all

Section "Monitor"
        Identifier   "Monitor0"
        VendorName   "Monitor Vendor"
        ModelName    "Monitor Model"
   HorizSync    31.5 - 48.5
   VertRefresh  40.0 - 70.0

EndSection
The Monitor is TFT display. The start of XGL still fails:

Code: Select all

Xgl :1 -ac -accel glx:pbuffer -accel xv
......
......
Fatal server error:
no visual format found

Ty for the great work you are doing!

But what's the direfference of yours and hannos?
http://dev.gentoo.org/~hanno check it out he is still publishing overlays too.

Give us some info about yours. :)
Thx, like someone said before, the main difference is Mesa/Xgl/compiz are using snapshot of the CVS tree working on my laptop (for reference, A vaio fs-115 with a Pentium M 730 and a Nvidia GeForce Go 6200). They are based on hanno's from 20060118, but i continued it on my side when compiz went out.
This is actually to give the possibility to re-emerge things with the exact same source...eg: At one moment last week, Xgl decided to use another naming for functions and this ended with people starting to rewrite patches from the overlay... ending in a quite messy way to install Xgl for people starting to try it...

The bad part is it's a lot of work to keep updated, since I have to grab cvs, compile (check if everything go well), test, pack the CVS tree i used, prepare ebuild , recompile, retest and distribute ;)
==> I don't plan to release new one (I just had some free time)...and I think this can be a good starter to Xgl / compiz ... So if anyone has time, they can continue this :)

The possible problems to upgrade to hanno's: you should always (re)emerge mesa xgl compiz since the 2 overlays can be quite differents on the patches .
(or someone knows a super CVS command to get the exact snapshot like -r 1234 of SVN ?)

Is there any way to use compiz in KDE? It seems totally useless for me: Compiz kills kwin and leaves KDE behind with no window manager.

I just need the wobbly effect and glxcompmgr seems to be broken (it's always missing extensions).

Is there any way I can see the window manager? The only thing that happens is that all window decorations disappear. It's impossible to do anything with the desktop after that.

How can I move windows? How do I maximise?

when I do
$ DISPLAY=:1 gnome-window-decorator
nothing happen

If i try to emerge cairo with glitz USE :
# USE="glitz" emerge -av cairo
I have this error :
...
make[2]: *** [cairo-glitz-surface.lo] Erreur 1
...

I have also a problème when I launch Sgl :
$ Xgl :1 -ac -accel glx:pbuffer -accel xv
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/OTF, removing from list!
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/CID/, removing from list!
And i dont know i resolve it

i dont know how to resize without the decorations. you can move the windows by holding down the alt key and drag the windows with your mouse.

@ irondog

It's not absolutly useless. You can move the window with ctrl+alt+left mouseclick.
You can resize the window with ctrl+alt+right mouseclick.
I don't use glxcompmgr i use compiz...

I have a problem compiling compiz with +kde flag.
I am using pijalu's 20060210 overlay.

Code: Select all

checking for KDE_WINDOW_DECORATOR... updating cache
./configure: line 21395: $cache_file: ambiguous redirect
configure: creating ./config.status

Code: Select all

the following optional plugins will be compiled:
  gconf: no

the following optional plugins will be compiled:
  gconf: yes
  place: yes
  menu:  yes
  svg:   no

and the following optional features will be compiled:
  gnome: no
  kde:   no
What do I have to do to make compiz compile with KDE features?
Thanks!

SRPM in here might contain usable patches too: http://people.redhat.com/rstrode/bling/SRPMS/

Files in there are srpm's for new Metacity, now the -spif2 branch is merged into HEAD. Some nice gl-based effects in there too, but on a "normal" X server

Hi,

now I have the problem, that xorg can't find libXaw.so.8, the libXaw.so.7 exists, may I simply link to it?

From what I've understood, the kde part is disabled as there is nothing that really works there at the moment.
If someone knows a actual way of enabling these window decorations and get something useful from it, please reply to this thread.

first: thx pijula for your package, it compiles without errors

the part i can't change is to bring up the window decorations. my gnome-session is without borders, title bars ...
, also xsession with only one xterm under XGL. (no window decoration)
here is a picture of it: http://bytesource.de/bilder/Bildschirmfoto.png (sorry for size, no way to shrink at time)

Ive compiled cairo with USE="glitz" (with "x11-libs/cairo" in /etc/portage/package.keywords)
and package from pijula "my-xgloverlay-20060210.tar.bz2"

-XGL is for me to buggy, xv is very cpu intensive, full-screen with mplayer most impossible (3-4 time higher cpu usage than normal X)
-tvtime has damage picture output
-no logout under XGL-Gnome, sometimes damaged console fonts after CTRL+ALT+DEL (and have to delete the ~/.gnome2/session file)
...and so on

its incredibel, but too many bugs

my startscript..

Code: Select all

#!/bin/bash
echo ">Starting XGL at Display: $1"
echo "========= XGL ============"
Xgl :1 -ac -accel xv -accel glx:pbuffer &
sleep 3
echo "======= GNOME ==========="
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/opengl/xorg-x11/lib/
DISPLAY=:1 gnome-session &
sleep 5
echo "======= COMPIZ ============"
DISPLAY=:1 compiz --replace gconf switcher decoration fade wobbly minimize cube rotate zoom scale move resize place &
sleep 1
DISPLAY=:1 gnome-window-decorator

I get XGL to start but but my luck ends there, i am enable to use any of its nice features.

Using KDE with gnome-window-decorator works very well for me.
Problems arise from systray. If I start eg. Kaffeine, konqueror goes foo. Workaround is to disable system tray support per application. Akregator is the only app that does not work for me.

My xglstart-skript:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
Xgl :1 -ac -accel xv:pbuffer -accel glx:pbuffer &
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/opengl/xorg-x11/lib/ DISPLAY=:1  compiz --replace gconf &
DISPLAY=:1 gnome-window-decorator &
DISPLAY=:1 startkde &
xbindkeys &
I have gnome-light and gconf-editor installed though.

Hello,

I was able to compile the kde-window-decorator.

Code: Select all

emerge qt #install QT4
./configure --enable-kde
make #until it fails (moc problem)
cd kde/window-decorator
moc < qwmwindow.h > qwmwindow.moc
moc < qwmscreen.h > qwmscreen.moc
cd ../../
make
and have fun.

But I don't know how to use it?? :oops:
Any help is very welcome :?:

I saw the moc error, but have no idea what a moc is!

I just did:

Code: Select all

cd /var/tmp/portage/compiz-0.1/work/app/compiz/kde/window-decorator
moc < qwmwindow.h > qwmwindow.moc
moc < qwmscreen.h > qwmscreen.moc
FEATURES="keepwork" emerge compiz
And kde-window-decorator is now in my path. About to see if I can work it.

edit: Yup, doesn't work :) I get a lot of this though:

Code: Select all

event filter in decorator
configure notify
property notify
So perhaps there isn't actually a decoration yet, just the basics? Good find ravageNG.

well, cairo is looking for /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.la, but that was a 0 byte file - so I copied a presumably good on ( symlink ) from /usr/lib/opengl/ati/lib, but still complains about not a valid library archive
