Upgrading an old gcc 2.95 system to 3.4.4 - how?

I found one of my machines is still running on gcc 2.95!! I need to install some new packages, but there seems to be a lot of inconsistency in portage - actually only on this system. Since it would be fine to upgrade to gcc3* anyway, I tried to, but .. failed. no matter which profile I tried, emerge fails with

emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy ">=sys-devel/gcc-4.2-r4".

Is there any way to upgrade such an old system, or will I have to re-install everything? I already searched the forums for the old gcc-upgrade thread but couldn't find it

 emerge gcc-4.2

Version 4.2 is a long way off yet.
3.4.5 being the latest stable and gcc-4.1.0_beta20060106.ebuild the most recent ebuild
