Now i am a newbie so i am assuming that my opengl is alive and kicking . I can confirm this because i can run glxgears and gives fps is the range of 2500-3500 Fps . Now i never had this problem , when i try to run quake 4 i get this error

Did you recently change to GCC 3.4.4? I think I got similar error when I did. Re-emerging nvidia-glx and nvidia-kernel did the job.

yeah i had upgraded my gcc a long time before i even bought the card . i don't think that has any bearing on the problem though ....................... Ty for helpin though

Your xorg.conf looks good to me. What card you have? 2500-3500 is quite low score in glxgears. My GeForce 6800gt gets 13000 in glxgears.

Have you ran "eselect opengl set nvidia"? When did the problem start? After emerge -[something] world? Try to re-emerge the drivers, I'm quite sure that I got the same error when I switched to GCC 3.4.4 and did emerge -e world (updates/recompiles everything).

If still out of luck, post output of "cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE".


[edit] If you have anti-aliasing or anisotropic filtering on, your glxgears score will be low.

no EE

Well i did that and found no line with EE in the log file and i hav e a 6200 so think it has low FPS though i would expect FPS is range of 5500 , yeah i was suprised that it was soo low my old intel in built graphics cad gave me FPS in range of 2500 hmmm

Did you:
- Re-emerge the nvidia-packages?
- Run "eselect opengl set nvidia"?

If you did, try to run "opengl-update nvidia" (after re-emerging nvidia drivers).

To point out the obvious, there's something wrong when libGL.so cannot be loaded. If those earlier commands doesn't solve it, you might have to resort in somekind of hackish solution which won't be pretty. Also running unstable system (ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86") is asking for trouble.

yeah remerged nvidia thing and yes did opengl update thing too , didn't help though thank you for helping me and yeah i am going to try that LD_PRELOAD

Are you using the script or binary to start Quake4? The script _should_ take care of that, but could be that it fails in it for some reason.

You can modify the script. Change "./quake4.x86 $*" to: LD_PRELOAD="/usr/lib/libGL.so.1" ./quake4.x86 $*
And it should work.
