Howto Firefox and Flash at 64bit... a temporary solution...

As all the gentoo64 users know, atm there isn't any way to see swf files inside our 64 bit Firefox, since Macromedia @%$##@$ and thus we have to use the 32 bit precompiled version of Firefox.
While searching for other kind of software I found an excellent plugin for Firefox with the name MediaPlayerConnectivity and you can get it from here:
https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/m ... =10&id=446 With that you can launch embed video of website in an external application with a simple click plus flash files.
Install it then and also

emerge netscape-flash

with the gtk flag.
Then through the options of the extension browse for /usr/bin/gflashplayer and that's it, it works inside the 64 bit version of our browser!
Ofcourse is not what we have dreamed for, but it's something which could serve us until gplflash2 is out

Personally, I'm just psyched to find out that there is a way to just run the flash player standalone app

Most of my flash usage is in watching movies I download, so that actually solves the problem for my 64 system. And now that there's a way to link that to my browser, even better

The other problem is it's not always possible to hack into the source of a webpage to get the swf link. But that should hopefully be solved too

If not, oh well, I'm just glad to revel in the current flash goodness =)

Just a question before I try this:

Do the flash videos appear in the parent window (where they are supposed to), or in a new one? If the former, then, if I get it working....w00t!

I couldn't get it embedded, it's opening gflashplayer for playing the flash file...

If there were any way to get it embedded like mplayerplug-in do...

Look out for upgrades of netscape-flash without the gtk use flag.
7.0.25 works, 7.0.61 doesn't have the gtk flag any more and therefor this won't work any more.
I masked 7.0.61 and above.

I saw that with crossover office 5 you can install a windows flash 7 plugin on a 64 bit linux mozilla based browser. Nearly black magic...

The only problem with running flash through media connectivity plugin is that the standalone player, gflashplayer, only supports up to flash6 (unless it has changed since I ran this a few months back) so certain content will not work. This is why I run 32-bit firefox with flash and I use media connectivity for playing mpeg/avi/mov/etc....

Look at localghost's post, four posts above yours.
They have removed gflashplayer from the tarball, so you have to mask version 7.0.61 and newer, as stated.

I use 64bit firefox with 32bit flash with no problems. I use a wrapper called nspluginwrapper you can get the ebuild from this thread

it works great for me. I have everything I need with 64bit firefox. The only bug is that on some really complicated or huge flash sites will firefox will lockup or crash. But that hasn't happened to me in a long time. If it is a big issue you could use a extention to disable flash objects until you click on them so you can pick and choose what flash you want to see.
