Is it ok to disable the ipv6 use flag?

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

I guess the gentoo default is to enable the ipv6 use flag. I was wondering why, and is it safe to disable it? I dont use any ipv6 hardware.

Thanks,
Darren

it is optional. if disabling it broke things, they wouldnt make it optional =)

if you disable it though, disable it across the board and run emerge --newuse world

Since ipv6 isn't widely used right now, it's safe to disable. However, in two or three years, I believe IPv6 will be more widespread in applications.

While you're at it, you can also disable it in the kernel configuration, it makes the compilation a bit shorter :) It's on by default.

People say that for over five years now. Unless the major ISPs start providing their customers with IPv6 adresses nothing will change.
