Thanks for replies, Tiger683 tried you suggestion but no joy :(

Had already tried different options for device but none worked.

/dev/input only contains /dev/input/mice and this contains nothing?

Check this is not same issue as mine, my X won't start and this is because having pointer issues.

acpi-cpufreq now loads as module on my thinkpad, but:

Code: Select all

ACPI-0292: *** Error: Looking up [SERN] in namespace, AE_ALREADY_EXISTS
ACPI-0508: *** Error: Method execution failed [\_SB_.PCI0.LPC_.EC__.GBIF] (Node b1995600), AE_ALREADY_EXISTS
ACPI-0213: *** Error: Method reached maximum reentrancy limit (255)
ACPI-0508: *** Error: Method execution failed [\_SB_.PCI0.LPC_.EC__.BAT0._BIF] (Node b19954c0), AE_AML_METHOD_LIMIT
Compiled into kernel it works.

Weird I didn't get this error with nitro1... Disabling "Dynamic Tick Timer" makes the compile work. Seems like someone else got it with nitro1.
kernel/dyn-tick.c:27:26: asm/dyn-tick.h: No such file or directory
kernel/dyn-tick.c: In function `do_dyn_reprogram':
kernel/dyn-tick.c:109: error: `per_cpu__irq_stat' undeclared (first use in this function)
kernel/dyn-tick.c:109: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
kernel/dyn-tick.c:109: error: for each function it appears in.)
make[1]: *** [kernel/dyn-tick.o] Error 1
Also, I couldn't compile fglrx.ko with the previous kernel but now it works so that is good at least. Gonna try the kernel now and see if it works.

@Tiger: Yes good idea! But is it really necessary to have 079, or would also an older one be sufficiant?

hmm, is there any patch related to hdaps? Because it's not working with this kernel. (nitro1: it was working)

Code: Select all

hdaps: IBM ThinkPad T43 detected.
hdaps: failed to claim resource 0
hdaps: driver init failed (error=-16)!
Any other hints?

-16 is for "device or resource busy"(EBUSY)...... strange

anyways, try reverting this one:

Thanks for another great nitro. Maybe you can include eCryptfs in your next release.

ahorn, are you sure you're looking at the right memory stats? go to a terminal and do
free
and post the output. You should be looking at the second line, '+/- buffers/cache:'

I suppose there's a reason it's called 'nitro', because damn, this kernel is fast. Best f*cking kernel I've used...

Hey!!!

I'd like to know how do you benchmark the performance gain on your systems, and which type of gain are we talking about.

I know glxgears is good to measure 3d acceleration( with nitro-sources i get 30%+ at least ) and somebody told me about acovea, but I dont think nitro-sources influences the type of thing acovea is meant for bechmarking.

So, I'd like to test my overall system performance with diferent kernels and see which configuration is better for me, which I/O Scheduler and a couple other things.

Does anyone know how may I do that the easy way????

it's shown as sys in top and it's shown in mrtg, too. if i stop kdm, the higher load is gone. with xdm running, the system is more or less at zero load. but kdm is needed for some users here. so, what you people think? is it kernel related? it wasn't there with 15-nitro1 and i did no other touches at software.

thanks for your help, ahorn.

I just want to add that this kernel compiled here with no warnings whatsoever - it's the first one ever (and I've tried them all - gentoo, vanilla, love, etc.). - I knew it would happen someday 8)

No, no. Glxgears should only be used to test if DRI is functional and running. It should in no way be used as a benchmarking app. Instead you should try a game like Quake 4, Doom 3 or UT2004 and use a benchmark map.

RaZoR1394:

Tell me if the following solves your dyn-tick compile problem:

Code: Select all

cp /usr/src/linux/include/asm-i386/dyn-tick.h /usr/src/linux/include/asm/dyn-tick.h
cheers

In my case:
- Stable up to now.
- Dynamic tick was disabled (didn't try it on, as I don't need it).
- No strange logs.
- KDM runs as normal (sitting idle gives me around 2% to 3% CPU usage).
- UDEV-073
